So, if the dealer tells you to sort it out yourself, i strongly suggest you tel the dealer to go and f**k himself and find another one.
It is actually not difficult, you need to arrange insurance with a company, Smile/Zurich/AXA/Whoever, they will send a confirmation to your vehicle center electronically, you go there with the existing papers of the car (Permis Circulation), the vehicle center will cancel this, give you a new one in your name, issue you corresponding plates (make sure you know if you want a long rear plate or a square one) you toddle off and fix them to you new car and you're all good to go.
Both insurance bill and vehicle center bill comes a bit later in the post.
No need to . Mail the required docs (including those for first timers like you), or take them to the Prüfstelle Mels in Mels (20km south of you, easily available by train but the Prüfstelle is 2km from the train station).
As for the Versicherungsnachweis, the insurance sends that directly once you have their offer.
You can cancel an insurance contract during the first two weeks, useful if you’re in a hurry and want to take out just any one so you can use your car. IME Mobiliar Insurances is among the better ones. If you take out full casco you want to make sure you understand how much you get paid out after 3-4-5 years if the car is totaled.
You should have to do nothing, except arrange insurance, which is easy. Swiss car insurance is not very competitive and expensive - but reliable. I recommend Zurich.
I have bought 5 new cars from dealers over the years and they did all the donkey work.
Tesla requires a little more work, but they are not dealers...
Just realized it’s Tesla. Well, this is just the introduction to the superb Tesla customer service experience.
At least you’re not alone. Check Tesla Fahrer und Freunde forum , Model 3 Auslieferung Schweiz (Delivery Switzerland) thread . There’s a recent rant about the same 990 CHF for nothing. Tesla somehow makes AMAG look good
Rubbish. As you say it varies from canton to canton. Some tax by displacement other tax by rated power. In the former case you pay nearly, or actually nothing (like Zurich), in the latter case you pay a huge amount (like Schwyz).
St. Gallen on the other hand taxes by weight and gives a rebate for low emission vehicles.
