I'll be in Lausanne this winter for 4 months (internship). Given that I live in California I have no big jackets! I need a knee high, puffy women's jacket. I'm in Rome for vacation right now, in your opinion should I try to buy a winter jacket in Rome or Lausanne?
I care about both style and price. I've shopped around for it in Rome, the warm ones (down) are 200 euros and above, the ones I liked are 400e I've never been to Lausanne, I need to know if there are a lot of options for big jackets, and if you think Rome is cheaper than Lausanne or if it's the same...
Though I don't knwo what's on offer in Rome, I'd be inclined to say that you'll find a better selectionin Lausanne simply because it's just not that cold in Rome.
Eyes closed, buy in Rome. Rome can get quite chilly although not as Lausanne probably. THe selection will be greater and the prices a low lower...Happy Shopping!
and I would say, just get it from ebay.com, that's where I buy most of my clothes. Switzerland is a nice place, but not really a counrty for shopping trips. It's not really cold enough here for a big puffy jacket yet, so you can easily wait a few days until the parcel arrives.
I agree with evianers. I'm not too familiar with prices in Lausanne but I'd be tempted to say that in Rome winter jackets should be cheaper. And I would not worry about the selection either, we are speaking about Italy after all
I've been in Rome for a week, it has been FREEZING in here!! There was a storm or something, lows of 2-4 C, and I've been walking all over the city at night in my california jacket I caught a cold twice already!
I am very afraid of switzerland winter okay I'll buy here if you think it's cheaper. You guys think 200 euros is normal price for a down jacket? Or too much/too little? The ones I've liked where 400e, not at all possible on a graduate student budget! I guess I'll have to be okay with looking like a refrigerator ....
Ebay would have been great, but I always have a hard time buying clothes without wearing them first. I'm a size 40 (xtra small) ... most clothes don't fit me right! especially big winter jackets...
Polyester is just fine, providing you wear some fleece underneath or wooly sweater, and that can get a little bulky. Down is great since you can have just a t-shirt underneath and will not be cold. Polyester with good lining (mocrofiber or fleece, etc.) can do the job, but I'd go for down, if you are petite and get cold easily. Just beware of cheap down, it does not take wear and tear well, the cheap down comes thru the lining after a few weeks of wearing it. You don't want to look like a chicken, dropping feathers here and there
I'd buy in Rome (not in the center designer's stores, but in some mall outlets, etc). The chances are what you can buy here in CH it will be Italian anyway and you will have to shell out some amount more for the import tax, etc. The best would be to buy in France actually or Germany, since the clothes are cheaper and seem cuter. Just do not know how it compares with quality here in CH.
If you're on the tourist trail in Roma, you'll find tourist/Roma prices. If you go out of the city, you might find different stores and different pricing. If it's only for 4 months then go cheap and cheerful - iPer, for example, sells clothing.
In the case that you're prepared to compromise and not have the jacket that you have in your mind's eye, you'll find lots of options out there. You might want to get one you can ski in too, if you're planning that.
Hey, you are probably with your winter jacket by now, I assume.
But if you are not, I just saw a new line of down jackets in Manor, very reasonably priced (70-100fr). They don't seem cheaply made either, since those crappy ones usually already shed feathers when the staff hangs them..
Apparently a dawn jacket is the best. How do you know is a down jacket? What does it say on the label? And is it really worth it? I need something that has the same effect for the upper body as skiing pants have for the legs, Skiing jackets dont work i tried!
