Buying an engagement ring

Hi all,

I would like to hear of any suggestions of where to get an engagement ring from. I'm near Zurich and don't really know anywhere - I havent done this that often!

I have a car and can travel if need be e.g. Germany etc. Also if anyone has used the internet and have some recommendations, much appreciated. Choice & price are the considerations.

Many thanks!

Can't help with a recomendation but CONGRATULATIONS anyway ;-)

Remember it *must* cost three month's salary!!!

First - congratulations!

Second - try Bucherer on the Bahnhofstrasse in Zurich. IMO they have a really good selection of not too run-of-the-mill designs

A stroll along Bahnhofstrasse might throw up a few possibilities. Jelmoli has Christ for an average budget but you can go up as far as Bucherer and some of the arm-and-a-leg places like Cartier.

Oh, is it three now? Used to be two months' salary - at least back when I was an eager teenage consumer of engagement lore. (I remember thinking I'd rather forgo the rock entirely and go on a two-month honeymoon!)

Sorry, Breezy, none of this is helping you source a ring, is it? I'll give the thread back to Useful Knowledgeable People now. Good luck with it!

PS - I won't congratulate you just yet for fear of jinxing it... but well done getting this far.

Congratulations!

Just have a look around all the jewellers in Zurich and pick whwt you think will go down best!!

Find out what she likes first and then go from there; Antwerp is always a nice diamond visit.

From a purely practical view (and only from my experience) - avoid anything with "edges" on it (basically anything which is likely to snag tights and stockings). I have a ring where the stone is smoothly set into the main body of it and can wear it all the time. The engagement ring I inherited from my Grandma has wrecked countless items of hosiery.

OK, back to the romance of the thread...

We went to Pontalier, FR, both times for an eng. ring and wedding bands, good work and no fuss, done quickly and they are very inexpensive.

There are if I remember well 3 small old fashioned jewellers there on the main street. I know it should not be saved on, etc...cheap and engagement ring do not really go well together, but if you do not have ton of cash and want to get something not so bad, I recommend it there. Congrats!

I totally agree. My stone sticks out (maybe that's why it was so cheap?) with rough edges, I couldn't wear it for a year straight since tending to an infant, was afraid of scratching her..

Mine certainly didn't cost that much. I would feel like I couldn't wear it every day. At 21 I had other priorities. We put the money into buying our own home instead. Been married for 10 years though

And choose a bezel type setting with no prongs to get caught on things.

Italian designs are nice, but wherever you go make sure that you get a certified diamond. The can be 'created' or glued together! Also some definitely do not want 'blood diamonds' but how you can guard against that I don't know. Argos catalogue!? 43 pounds to 2,400. More than that take a trip to Dubai.

I would be sure you know about your partner's taste and ideas about spending/saving money. I know that doesn't sound romantic... but not everyone is... I wouldn't want three month's salary on my finger everyday!

Congratulations and good luck anyway.

not really a where to buy, but i suggest you learn the good old 4 C's, (could be a different name in CH tho). That way you kinda know what your looking for and understand why rocks are differently priced, 3 months salary lol...is that net or gross. Good luck

Actually, I have talked to my lovely wife-to-be and we know the style design already - a pointy out one unfortunately for those who have been recommending an embedded design! I think it will be a case of style over practicality if that is what she wants! It will most likely consist of three stones, a centre diamond and two sapphires with a platinum band.

I've been on the internet and checked out some fairly decent looking websites. I'd like to go somewhere so she can try some on. I really have never looked at rings etc before, so I am not even aware of the shops on the Bahnhofstrasse - ideally, i'd like to find one with a huge range. I think the only ring shop I have seen is Christ in Sihl City. It just isn't the sort of shop I naturally stop at (well maybe to check out the watches).

The next step would be to find somewhere with a better price. I'm guessing the Bahnhofstrasse has prices to match its reputation. I'm happy to buy the ring of my good lady's dreams, but if I can get the same one for 1/3 less, the saved money can be used elsewhere - wedding, house etc. And yes, she is of the same mindset. In fact, she is the one looking on the internet more than me.

Thanks again one and all.

I am not in Zurich, but i have been shopping there a few times, there are lot`s of Jewellary shops, just have a nice walk round.

Ermmmm cough, but what is very often (go on tell us how many times)

Goodluck, and i hope she say`s yes

OMG i can dream can`t i.

To be honest i thought the Swiss men didn`t buy engagment rings, and the women as a Diamond in her wedding ring

sometimes jewelers dont put the rings in the window- you ask someone in the shop and they show you draws and draws full of rings..

this happened in 2 shops in Baden.. assume others are the same?

i like the flat sort too- better to go mountainbiking with

How about planning a pre-wedding honeymoon to South Africa, for the value of 1-month salary it will look like 6-months worth

I got my both engagement rings in SA and it was well worth it. Traditionally solitaire ring and bands for lady and popular titanium one for myself
