Buying an engagement ring

Reading some comments seem to suggest that some are more concerned with the name cost and size of the ring, I find that extremely sad.

For me the meaning behind an engagement ring is the important factor not the bling factor or if it cost 3 months wages.

I just got engaged, yay, and I said to my lovely man I am happy to use the ring he got me last year as the engagement ring, as at the moment we are looking to buy a house.

For our wedding rings we are going to get them custom made in Germany, as my uncle many many years ago gave me a nice gold nugget from the Australian Gold Mines which I have held on for many years, and think this is the perfect opportunity to use it.

I am glad you like your ring, Nikix, because 45 grand is a lot to drop on a ring. But if you have the dough and you love it, why not. However for a lot of people, including me as a jeweler, that's not money well spent.

Just for fun I looked up an online seller mentioned previously for just your center stone. At 1.8 carats with the specs you gave, indeed the cost is 38-39K. However if you dropped just a tenth of a carat to 1.7, the price drops to 24K and the difference on your finger would be unnoticeable.

What matters is that the people doing the buying and wearing are happy and feel they got a good value. That's going to vary from person to person.

Just wanted to share a website I found, after visiting some more jewelers in Zurich. The website is http://www.edenly.com . One ring I saw in ZRH costing 600chf is 290€ on this website...

Tiffany. You can't go wrong with the classic ring. And you can get a diamond to suit your budget. There's an outlet on Bahnhofstrasse.

Who cares ?

My wife`s engagement ring has lost a small diamond. Is there any recommendations of somewhere in Zurich/ Luzern/ Zug which will replace at a reasonable price and could possibly resize another ring?

You sound like a very shallow person that likes gloating especially with your last line. Very sad really.

Well I think nikix was only trying to be helpful, and of course she loves her ring.

And quality and certifications are important for a purchase like this which will be worn daily for a very long time.

I also believe in buying from reputable jewellers. I'd personally rather buy a smaller diamond in a super setting, with certificates, from Tiffany's (or any of the jewellers on Bahnhofstr) than jetting off to Amsterdam or the Middle East and buying big rocks. A friend's husband did that ... a 'massive' stone, but frankly looks fake. She's always a big uncomfortable wearing it.

The ring should fit the person for whom it is intended. Big or small. Fortunately for my partner, I like small and discrete ... but even than comes with a price tag. I have only a few pieces which I wear every day and night (only earrings and watch go off at night). On pay per wear it works our cheap (well so I claim!).

Just a bit of feedback on the aforementioned website. I did order the ring, it arrived by fedex 3 weeks later (a tad long considering it takes 48-72hrours if sent to France...). It is sent from France, so I was wary of custom charges even though the website assures there are "no custom charges to CH"! Well, indeed, no extra cost than what was indicated on the website. And the ring matches the description and quality, so very pleased indeed with this buy.

It also comes with a preprinted return label so you can return your buy by fedex if you change your mind or want to exchange.

I had to have some repairs done on jewelry (loose stone, broken lock, etc.), and was very happy with

He is very friendly, advises on the best solution rather than the most profitable one, also tells you when not to do something and always delivers as promised and good quality. It would be worth while calling him in advance, as it is a one man show, so that he is not open as long as the big chains on Bahnhofstrasse.

Hi, this was some years back, I hope you are happily married now I was wondering where you end up getting your ring? I've noticed it still isn't very easy to get a nice engagement ring. Many thanks
