buying casual stuff

I'm coming from Spain, where in general you have some small "bazaar" stores (usually owned by chinese people, though not necessarily) where you can get all kinds of stuff pretty cheap (from poker cards, to electric plugs, cutlery, etc)

They're basically mixed products shops, and are very useful when you want to get something quick, inexpensive and don't go to go the shopping mall, etc

Does something like this exist in switzerland?

you know, I have not seen those here? But every city has a fleamarket that I am sure would accomodate your needs, but usually during the summer...otherwise, try a brocki ?

PS: brocki: Brockenhaus, second hand store

Hi Angela,

Well, I'm not talking about a used stuff shop, it's a regular shop, it's just that they don't sell something specific, they just sell all sorts of (new) stuff

It may just be something cultural and these kind of shops just not exist in Switzerland =)

Something like this: http://www.riverworld.es/wp-content/...iendas_v14.jpg

Thanks for the tip!

No such a shop would not exist in Switzerland. In the photo is shows it is taking up space of the walking street, that would not be allowed.

Shops are not open 24hours & almost everything closed on Sundays.

I do not believe that most people in Switzerland would wish to buy something that had been standing out in the street submitted to the weather etc.

There are occasional street markets, fairs, but that is something else.

There ARE such shops, but usually inside shopping malls -- and not out in rain and cold

seph, I know exactly what you mean. They've appeared all over Spain starting around 5 years ago (they come mainly from around Wenzhou if anyone cares). There's nothing like that here in this part of Europe.

There are several such shops, even some chains, but they aren't quite as ubiquitous as in spain.

I think seph was talking about the type/mix of product rather than specifically wanting to find a shop that displays its wares outdoors (incidentally, I often see shops in Switzerland with products outside the shop doors such as basket of books, DVDs, rails of clothes and bags, etc).

I haven't seen the 2 franc shops that Verne mentions but there is one in Uster that springs to mind - Madal Bal - a bit more gift oriented than I think you are looking for but does have an eclectic selection of kitchen things, general home stuff, random bits of furniture, fabrics, etc. It's mostly around Zurich but also in Geneva.

I know what you are talking about but unfortunately you won't find that here that is why I said maybe try the Brocki or if you live close to the border you can try Germany, I've seen some there

the Netherlands is swamped by them

(did this make sense in English, otherwise please proceed to slap me)

There are more and more of them popping up, like Wollishofener said, mostly in malls , but not only. If they are not in a mall , they might be in a more "immigrant" part of town, they might offer closeouts, "restposten" and sometimes you can find something useful among the "crap". In Zürich , I ́ve seen them around Oerlikon. Unfortunately I couldn ́t tell you about where they might be in Luzern . Good luck searching which anyway is half the fun

One more thing, they will not necessarily be owned by Chinese people , nor have the telltale red lanterns outside, like in southern Europe.

There is a shop called Maxi Bazar which may be the kind of thing you're looking for.

I think they're mostly located in the French speaking part of Switzerland but there are some in the Swiss German bit.

If you look again, they are probably not blocking the walking street. Many shops have a space outside that is not part of the walking street, some might use, some do not.

There is one in Peseux. It's called Maxi Bazaar. Upstairs from the Denner that is across the street from the Migros.

*damn, BM got there first! I was too slow...

For what in America we would call "Five and Dime" I find Otto's and Radikals a good mixed casual store.

Sorry, can not say for Luzern, there is a shop like you describe at Spalenmarkt in Basel. (A bit tiny and cramped rows, but a bit of everything inside)

Meanwhile, while there are some interesting finds for pretty cheap prices, there are also something that are a bit expensive (I found a piggy bank there that they were asking 35chf for - I decided I'd rather spend the 35chf on something else!)

But now you have no place to put the 35CHF you didn't spend?!

There is a '2 frank shop ' at the train station in Adliswil, Zurich. There are also a couple of these sorts of shops near bahnhof wipkingen zurich.

Indeed! THings like the Iphone for example .
