Buying furniture for permanent living

We plan to settle down near Nyon. The flat is unfurnished, so we would need to buy all the furniture. Would like to do it with quality, style and reasonable prices. Where do you buy furniture? Sofa, tables, chairs for a start.

Could you recommend some shops in France which would be close? Any trusted man with a van who could help? Alternativly, the shop with favorable delivery options or letting their own van.

Thanks a lot for the help!

I bought most of my furniture from IKEA. There is a shop at Aubonne, close to Nyon, and you can hire a van to drive your purchases home.

I have no complaints about the quality, the only item that doesn't look as good as it did when I bought it is my sofa, and that's because my cat uses it as a scratching post!

Yes, you do have to assemble everything yourself... but it's not hard.

Otto's switzerland charge 25 for insurance whether one hour or 24. they charge 25 for the first hour, then 16 each additional hour. so the 1st hour is 50 then 16chf each additonal hour.

maison du monde. it takes a bit of time but it's worth it and they deliver.

IKEA all the way, they deliver for a small charge too, and it means someone will help you carry if things need to go upstairs!

The only problem is you always buy more than you went in for!

IIRC, the small charge is something like 10 to 15% of the cost of the goods you want delivered.

Suggest you visit Etoy/Aubonne for a day or two, it has become the center for furniture sales in the area. You have most of the retailers there so you can get a great overview in one place. There is Ikea in Aubonne, then you have Pfister, Fly, Interio, Interior's, Migros Micasa, Hornbach, all there in Etoy next door. Have a look and see what suits. Ikea and Hornbach have vans you can rent. As I recall Interio, Interior, and Pfister deliver, for a fee.

Thanks a lot for recommending Etoy/Aubonne. Many shops in one place - that's what I need. In addition, I think a combination of things from different shops is more interesting than pure Ikea.

Anybody bought furniture in France? I have heard there is an industrial area next to Annemasse with some shops. Is there a beter choice than in the above mentioned Swiss shops?

Any advices about places to get vintage furniture? Not modern and used, not antique yet, but something with more personality than in mass market.

It's not vintage, but Maisons du Monde (recommended above) have stuff that's pretty unique -- it doesn't look mass market.

I'm also a fan of Flamant for the same reason -- the furniture is new, but has personality and doesn't look mass-produced. They don't have a store in Geneva, but they do have stockists.

Vintage furniture like rustic is a pretty loose term, one persons vintage or rustic is someone else's firewood!!

I custom make a range of furniture from both new and reclaimed wood which is part rustic, part vintage, as it is made to order we can co-create a piece which is unique. Some examples here www.noonwoodwork.com , please let me know if I can assist you. I was in London a few weeks ago and some smaller decorator pieces (vases, lamps, old signs ect) I saw in markets there were really cool and prices were good (IMHO). www.interio.ch also has an online mobel borse (private secondhand items for sale) I have seen some good items there as well but you need to search a bit. Happy hunting!!

Thanks a lot for reminding about Maison du Monde. Checked their website, found many pieces I like. But I guess they don't sell in Switzerland. Do you if they have their shop anywhere close to the border?

I just love all the things made from solid wood. Yours look so warm and the textures and patterns of wood are so beautiful. I am still in the process of defining the style, will be forming it step by step. But I will take into consideration that you can produce this type of furniture.

Thanks for the hints where to hunt for rare pieces.

I am sure London has much more to offer than Switzerland, especially their markets like in Notting Hill, for example.

The shopping center in Annemasse that you are referring to is actually in Ville-le-Grande. In that shopping center you will find a Troc, a Bo Concept, a brand new Maison du Monde, a Casa, and a large number of one-off furniture, kitchen, design, fabric and lighting stores. It is well worth a day trip.

Oh, and there is a terrific sports bar with good burgers right next to the Botanic, which is a garden center.

Troc is a chain throughout Europe where people drop off stuff for consignment, (as opposed to just dropping off stuff for donation). Sometimes you can find real treasures at a Troc; you just have to keep going back because you never know what you are going to find on any given day. There are Trocs in Crissier and Aigle en Suisse and in Ville-le-Grande and Thonon en France.

I guess you can't see my message above that says the they will deliver.

But if you look at the website you can see there are three stores near the border of Geneva: Thoiry, Annemasse (Ville-la-Grand), Thonon-les-Bains

We recently bought a house and I sourced from the following, because we wanted pieces with charachter and not just Ikea or more expensive versions of Ikea like Pfister: Maison du Monde www.maisondumonde.com the service, price and delivery was excellent, Brokehaus I got some great pieces from Zurich Brokehaus, and Argaau. You should have a few locally too. There is a shop called Lotus, and http://www.kokon.com , www.interio,ch and www.boconcept.ch . We also have kids and there were soem great wooden wall art pieces in www.micasa.ch , and www.fly.ch My husband is Danish so we do like scandinavian design overall, but here they had some unique and higher quality pieces. We have some ikea stuff as well, so it is a good mix of finding the pieces you like best. Hope this helps

I agree with previous posts but would like to say that I was a bit dissapointed with maison du monde, got two lamps from them and yes they are beautiful but they had been mass produced as ikea stuff and you can see it in the detail, otherwise I am OK with them.

Interio has some good stuff and they have sales pretty frequently, I also look for stuff that goes on sale here on EF as I have got somre pretty neat and unique stuff from EF members such as my beautiful dinner table which is made of solid wood, one of the best things I've got really

Dinnerware etc I keep a special one from Germany but otherwise everything is Ikea, or some stuff I broguht back home from Peru...good luck furnishing your house!!

Absolutely. At the prices they are selling for, the stuff IS mass produced like Ikea, Fly, Micasa. But what's nice is their particular style. Also it's unlikely the furniture will hold up to really heavy usage. It's not made to last generations.

If you want that kind of furniture, you'll have to pay a lot more than MdM/Ikea/Fly or look in the brocantes/second hand stores.

Oh, the other nice thing is you don't have to put it together!

True enough, I did have to put the lamps together though hehe but I won't complain it was really simple and they are metal, really pretty so hopefully they will last.

Another store I like, is casa, in Suisse Romandie, again not stuff that will last forever but they have really cute stuff

I can put together a lamp.

I was happy not to have to put together the 2.3m book shelf, the buffet, etc.

How about Schilliger, link below. Not exactly a huge selection as it's primarily a garden centre and also a bit pricey, but some nice stuff. And it's in Nyon area. I went for Ikea though, but I'm cheap
