Buying Sony LCD TV online

Hi all. I'm about to take the plunge to buy an LCD TV and I'm about to do it online, a first for me. I have lots of questions.

I'm thinking to buy a Sony 32 in. Anybody have any thoughts on that? Also, can anybody explain the differences in the models? You've got your S, your P, and your D models and your 3000, 3010, and 3020. Makes my head swim. Can't find a comparison review anywhere.

Also, anybody ever bought online? I'm thinking to buy thru Netto24 or Architronic. They both seem to have a pretty good record. Somewhat concerned about buying from other than a morter and brick store in case something goes wrong with TV, but I will get the additional 3 year warrantee anyway.

Thanks for all help.

Sharon

You should buy anything with 'Bravia' written on it.

I'll drink to that idea..!!

I bought my 32 in. at digitec.ch and was as happy with them as always...Prices are good, but I usually pick stuff up so I cannot comment on their delivery service.

Here's a wee copy & paste from elsewhere:

If you're going for a Sony be careful you buy what you want. There are not so good budget versions, and better quality more expensive versions. The following should help you make sure you buy the right one:

Here is a typical Sony LCD model number

KDL46V2000U

This number can be split up into 5 different parts - KDL - 46 - V - 2000 - U

KDL

The first part tells you about the TV's tuner. KLV- means an Analogue tuner. KDL- means that the TV is equipped with a digital one and can pick up Digital Terrestrial broadcasts ("Freeview" in the UK).

46

This is the size of the screen in inches.

V

This is the series number. There are 6 different letters that you can find here (U, S, V, X, W & E).

The U-Series:

The "value" range. The bottom range, designed to be cheap and sold at supermarkets and the like.

The S-Series:

One step up. The new S-Series models (KDL-xxS2000) feature the BRAVIA Engine technology. The older ones (KDL-SxxA12) do not.

The V-Series:

This is the affordable higher end option. They have always featured picture cleanup technology. The first BRAVIAs used "WEGA Engine", but the new ones use "BRAVIA Engine". The upcoming "V2000" versions also feature the new "Live Colour Creation" backlight, which apparently produces far better colour reproduction.

The X-Series :

These are the best ones available but only come in 40" and above sizes. They take the features of the V-Series, add full high-def (1920x1280) screen resolution, 2x HDMI inputs, and 2x Component inputs. The picture quality is also slightly better than the V-Series. The X-Series also features BRAVIA ENGINE EX and Digital Reality Creation, which are both included to enhance the quality of the picture specifically for large, high-res panels.

The W-Series:

They feature the S-Master digital amplifier, 1366x768 resolution, and 1 HDMI input. They are still one of the "prestigious" Sony models.

The E - Series:

These are the Rear Projection TVs that are based off an LCD technology.

2000

This is the colour of the TV's casing and does not change the technical spec of the TV.

2000 - Grey

2010 - Dark Grey

2020 - Silver

U

The "U" suffix means "United Kingdom". Continental Europe has the "E" suffix.

Swiss Chedder... I'm curious as to why you say never buy anything with "Bravia" written on it????

I'm curious as to why you cant read.

I think you will find that Swiss Cheddar said the opposite

I'm curious as to why I didn't read that too!!!!

Swiftly moving on.... I'm looking for a new telly too, Full HD to complement PS3, around 40" and up to about 3000chf. From visiting the various tv shops the ones that really seem to stand out are the Sony tellys, albeit they are quite pricey.

I have one of these and I love it, but pricey.

KDL40X2000U One thing I do want to know is it has a update card slot are Sony going to use these?

My friend swares by LG and he seems pretty happy with it.

I got a Sony Bravia 40" with 1080p, with the PS3, it's awsome. I think they're in your price range.

@ OP. I ordered the TV from Architronic, very good price, delivered it the next day I think.

Sony are doing a cashback offer on Full HD Bravia's at the moment.

300CHF off 40" models

500CHF off 46" and >

Only condition seems to be you have to purchase from a "real" store, and not online...

www.ehawk.ch in zug do good prices, and you can visit their shop as well.

sony do such cashbacks before they release new equipment. the new W series will be appearing in the next coupla months, in case you want the newest and shiniest, although there is nothing really innovative about it.

Ouch.. just checked the prices for a Philips with digitec and ehawk wants a 1000.-chf. more for the same TV..!

hmmm, i compared a few sonys and they seemed to be about the same price on digitec and hawk. which phillips tv are you looking at?

You're right, I mistakenly compared a 42" from digitec to a 47" from hawk. When I compared the price of a Philips 47pfl9732d there was only about a 2.-chf. difference between the two retailers.

glad we cleared that up!

For pricing it's good to check here as well:

http://www.toppreise.ch/

Also see what offers FUST, Interdiscount etc.. have

We got a Sony KDL-40X3500 back in January and love it. Bought it at Hawk and got a similar price to what the other sites on toppreise.ch were offering at the time.

If you have one, you might want to check out this site which has setup tips for adjusting your settings. They have recommendations for other HD TVs as well.
