Buying tall iron-free dress shirts

Hi folks

I'm built rather taller than the average Swiss (6' 4", or around 193cm for you metric types) and not terribly much heavier than your average Swiss would be if he was my height. Long arms too - most of my size is upper-body. This, as you can imagine, presents difficulty in buying anything with sleeves.

I've had success buying (not terribly impressive) dress shirts at H&M. I get their XL slim fits, and it seems about right - and at 25 bucks, I can buy a new one every couple of times after I wash it and it falls apart. However, I'd prefer to get some nicer shirts - I remember Brook Brothers (sp) back in the States had some nice wrinkle-free jobs that don't normally require pressing after a wash. Have you found anything like that here in Switzerland that comes in my kind of size? I'd appreciate any tips (preferably Zürich / Zug focused)!

Not sure where you can get them here, but Jones New York Slim-Fit make nice long, slimmer dress-shirts. Maybe check on amazon or ebay?

If I remember correctly Strellson has a line with longer sleeves. The also have an outlet in Kreuzlingen which be worth a visit once you've found if the shirts fit you. I have some tall friends who shop there (2m). If you're in Zurich check Herren Globus and / or Jelmoli. "Einhorn" (Unicorn) also has a line with longer arms. They should be available in Jelmoli. In Jelmoli just ask the ladies working there. They are good and could direct you also to other places. Bernies might also be worth a visit. The recently changed owner and might have good sales.

If all of the above fail: look out for a Gutschein on Groupon and / or Dein Deal as they often have deals for "Masshemden" I bought one last year for 3 shirts for 200 CHF. If you don't need to many that might be a nice thing to do and then you can really design it how you like it.

I always buy Olymp. These are the only ones that are really iron-free.

Some good clothing options here:

Where can I wear my tux?

Namely UK shirt makers: TM Lewin and Charles Tyrwhitt... you can usually customise the shirts to fit. My advice if you go down this route - go to London get yourself measures up properly and then you can order ad infinitum on-line as needed.

Another vote for Charles Tyrwhitt in the UK - I am a similar build to you and get all my shirts from them with the longest possible sleeve option and slim fit.

They have sales regularly so worth putting yourself on their email list to get notified.

Say, you weren't by any chance at the SBB lounge a few weeks ago with a blonde companion?

Take out the word "lounge" and the answer is probably yes. But no, I've never gotten around to visiting the SBB lounge.

If all else fails, Brooks Brothers delivers internationally.

For a step up from H&M, but perhaps a notch below BB, Land's End US has a limited selection of their shirts in tall, tailored fit sizes, again delivered internationally. (Unfortunately LE's UK and DE sites only offer 2 shirts in tall sizes, and both are traditional fit.)

And if everything else fails, there are many tailors in ZH who custom make shirts. Expensive compared to BB prices for the same quality, but not all that much more than off-the-rack Swiss prices. The name escapes me at the moment, but some years ago I had a couple of shirts made for my husband from a tailor located at the Kreuzplazt tram stop.

My husband is just a touch taller than you and an xl/17 but to be honest he's not found anything here. Mostly he just stocks up on stuff from Nordstrom in the US. Their iron free stuff is good. I understand they may deliver here now.

Brooks Brothers have the best shirts, I always stock up when Im in London.

Order them from there and get them sent to Zurich or Germany where you could pick them up...

I actually have a few white Brooks Brothers slim fit for sale but there size 15"

Actually, I have to say that I find BB shirts to be quite ugly. In my last trip to London, though, I found a brand called Charles Tyrwhitt that had some very reasonable prices (25 quid per shirt) with very nice stylings and a high-quality feel. They don't do the wrinkle-free bit as nice as BB, though.

Try Marks & Spencer in England, believe you can buy online. They do a range of 2 inch longer non iron shirts. I buy them on the odd occasion I am there.

My husband is 6' 3" (rather thin), and I've bought him non-iron dress shirts from Charles Vogele that fit quite well.

Love love LOVE those non-iron shirts!

But if you still can't find anything, you could also try JCPenney.com, which has a men's tall section and offers pretty affordable international shipping.

One thing - though you may do this already - take the shirts out of the dryer when they're just the tiniest bit damp (most dryers have a setting) and hang them up right away - they should be as wrinkle free as they're going to get.

If you are in the area check out El Classico on Bethovenstrasse (zh). It is right across from the Hyatt. They have a great selection of iron free shirts including olymp and strellson (i am also a big fan of olymp. they are truly wrinkle free.). They have really good and friendly service (english speaking too), and their prices are generally lower than the bigger department stores like jelmoli.
