C-Section on request

Hello,

A friend of mine is pregnant and want to have her baby by C-Section.

I know, for exemple, most of the woman in Istanbul (then I know) had their baby by C-Section. I guess it became a norm since the doctors and hospitals make more money on this procedure.

One of my friend had to see 5 doctors before one accept to deliver naturally. And she end up with a C-Section (doctor found something).

So I want to know if in Switzerland a woman can decided which way she wants to deliver, with natural way or C-Section.

Nil

Most DR's in switzerland will not perform a C section unless there is a medical reason for it - what are her reasons for wanting one? It is after all a major operation and requires 6 weeks post care

The short answer is: yes. 1 in 3 births is now by Caesarian in CH and I believe the number is going up, more and more women choose it. Here's an article in the Swiss Medical Review, it's in French.

This was a concern of ours when we arrived in Bern. Due to health reasons diagnosed at home in the U.S., we wanted a planned c-section. When we met with the OB he agreed immediately to it. We were very relieved. I know a number of other women here who had no problem getting a planned c-section.

Too posh to push?

Sure they will if you want one. The problem is more that the health insurance will only pay for it if there's a medical reason. They won't pay if it's just to have the baby on 10.10.2010 or if the woman is scared of a natural birth.

It's 6 days post care in the hospital and takes about 6 weeks to recover (at home)

Mirfield! Giving birth is scary for some women and some even decide not to have children because of the pain they can foresee. Also there are some medical indications that prevent you from giving birth naturally.

My doctor here in Zurich, was willing to give me a c-section as I was totally freaked out with giving birth naturally. I think it depends on the doctor..

Also I believe, the more "aged" you are the more willing the doctor will be. I had a simple procedure down under narcosis recently and still I managed to kick the doctor so I think they will give me a c section when the time (God willingly) comes...

And I AM freaked out by the pain!

Here, here, Angela-74. Instead of spending time judging women for the choices they make or are forced to make due to health reasons/illnesses, we should provide support and access to information. You never know why a women chooses or must choose a c-section unless she tells you.

Why mad?! If you read the original post, Angela-74, you will see that it is about elective caesarian.

I'll tell you why: Did you ever get a really bad dose of gastro-interitus? Horrific, stomach ripping cramps, cold sweats, nausea and vomiting? now imagine that, but instead of having the runs, you are constipated, in fact, you haven't "been" for 40 weeks and you have accumulated a 3.5 kg "big job". You have been puffing and panting and agonising and puking for 37 hours now, no sleep and no pain relief.

Tell me, if you knew you were going to experience that, would you be "too posh to push"?

Errr I was neither judging anyone nor really mad at Mirfield, I think he's great hence my smiley . The bottomline is each pf can choose what we go through be it labor or c section.

I was just trying to describe what it's like for some women to give birth, you asked why it angered some women.

Saying that a woman is too posh to push is making a mockery of the pain, exhaustion, fear and sometimes trauma women go through to bring children into the world.

We are living in the C21, yet women are still expected to bring children into the world in pain, exhaustion and fear but if they decide to take advantage of technology and make it easier on themselves they are told they're TPTP... something wrong there, I think. It's putting them on a sort of guilt trip, it's the same thing as putting pressure on women to breast feed.

Yes, we should take advantage of modern technology by all means. The kid can be born and microchipped at one go -- now that would be really cool. Not to mention practical.

Back to the original question - does anyone know of other cases here, where the request has been turned down point blank? What did the mother do? Is there an option to try another doctor in the same region? To give birth at the same hospital?

Yep, if you spend 42 hours with 15 hours of them on 2 minutes contractions WITHOUT any pain killer, if they have to cut you 5 cm because the baby doesn't pass and finally comes out totally blue... And spend the next 10 weeks having pain while walking OR sitting...

I'm telling you, it scares the shit out of you! And they say you won't remember.... right!

So if some women want to avoid it and have the chance and the choice, let it be!

Interesting - my OBGYN was not happy to do a c-section without any valid reason - now that reason can of course be due to a physical complaint or because the woman had a fear.

It does seem to be more and more common to have a planned c-section but it is still a major operation and something that should not be taken lightly.

A friend of mine had a horrific 1st birth that ended up with a c-section as an emergency. When she had her 2nd she asked for a planned one and they allowed.

I was concerned that my 2nd was going to be on the big side and started to discuss if I could have a planned c-section - my Dr didnt see the requirement and refused.

I was told that it has to be a medical requirement. Even having a first baby by C section does not automatically qualify you for the second one unless the doctor determines that the reason for the 1st still exists, or even the risk of going into labour is too great.

A C-section is an operation and like any operation has risks. It is considerably more expensive than a normal delivery, the recovery is long.

I have no idea why anyone would opt for an operation if it is not necessary.

I know of someone at 49 who had a natural birth. Age is not necessarily a factor in having a C-section.
