cablecom internet setup issue - can someone help?

Apologies for posting here - I know this isn't a tech support forum, but i'm at a total loss here.

I ordered Cablecom broadband recently, and received my pack yesterday (modem etc). I've hooked it all up: pc > modem > outlet, inserted the installation CD, followed all the instructions, but at the stage where a connection to the internet is attempted, I get timed out after 30 minutes. I'm presented with a screen asking me to contact customer support. I'm struggling with the helpline as there are only options for German, French or Italian.

I'm pretty sure i've configured everything correctly, disabled third party firewalls etc.

I'm assuming this registration step is necessary to log the mac address of my modem with the cabelcom servers, or am I able to bypass this, and enter default gateway, ip address etc manually?

If anyone can help, or point me in the right direction, it would be much appreciated!

You need to enter a password the first time you use the modem. If you call CableCom, select German. You'll find their English is better than your German...

If you are using Cablecom connection via TV-antenna, then it should be plug and play connection. I opened my connection few weeks back and it was just to connect the modem to the wall socket and then RJ-45 ethernet cable to the computer. I did not even need a installation CD. Computer automatically detects connection if it is open.

You should check if Cablecom have opened your line. Maybe line is still closed.

Or try to reset all settings and then just plug the PC to the modem again.

many thanks for everyone's reply. After reading those, I double checked both those issues.

In the end it turned out the cable line we had in our apartment was ancient and needed upgrading. It took numerous calls & 2 engineers to come out and confirm this. thought i'd just post the outcome, if anyone's trawling these forums with a similar problem.

I hope it's okay to revive this old thread:

We have problems activating a cablecom internet connection on Linux: since the CD they give obviously doesn't work in Linux (only Windows), following the instructions doesn't work.

What is needed to activate the connection? Does somebody have a step-by-step guide? Or can you point me to one?

Last, but not least: I am trying to help a relative in this remotely - so I am not at the install location...

Thanks for any help you can give.

Zsolt

I'd think all you need is your default route and DNS servers.

Do you connect straight to your cable modem or do you have a router connected to it?

Straight to the cable modem, no router

And you've set your default route to that of the cable modem? You've got dns set in /etc/resolv.conf?

I use UPC in Hungary, and the first time (or anytime the network card changes) you need to register the MAC address of the computer at a special site.... Isn't there anything similar with Cablecom CH?

Also, there was a kind person on site trying to help my relative and there is supposed to be a userid / password that needs to be entered before you can use the connection - and he didn't know where to enter this code, as the CD is not guiding along the installation (because it's for Windows)... any idea what kind of code this is?

good question - will need to check that (later today)... although in my experience Ubuntu (which has been installed in this case) does a good job at recognising network settings automatically

Well, she can access the status page of the cable modem at http://192.168.100.1 - so I don't think it's a routing problem... however Cable Modem Status is "Not Synchronized" (while it should be "Operational" if it were working correctly) - so I assume cablecom hasn't activated the internet connection on her line, yet

Gregv - thanks for your help so far.

Could be that cablecom hasn't got around to turning on the connection on their side yet.

The online led must illuminate continuously, if it doesn't, it could be a wiring mistake or a problem with the signal in the cable connector...

Internet connection generally gets activated the day the modem is shipped.

On the cable modem the following LEDs should be lit:

POWER - continuous

DS (downstream) - continuous

US (upstream) - continuous

ONLINE - continuous

LINK - blinking

TEL1 - continuous (if you have the phone)

Tell us what LEDs are lit - these will indicate the nature of the problem.

Be aware that the apartment wiring may be old or faulty, or your wall socket may be old or faulty. So try other sockets in the house, or at a neighbours house.

Thanks for all the comments... I talked to cablecom, and the line was activated a week ago. However they also suggested that it is very much possible the sockets / wiring could be the cause of the problem - this is all I could do remotely, with your help

Quick follow-up: cablecom sent a guy to fix the socket... and the net is working now

Thanks again for your ideas / help
