Cablecom Launch 10MB/50MB/100MB Fibre Optic Connections...

At the beginning of the month Cablecom apparently introduced it's "Fiberpower" service. Somehow this new offering did not appear on my radar until I just happened to be on their site looking to find a cheaper/faster plan. For those that also missed it, it offers the following flavors:

Fiber Power internet 100 (100 000 Kbit/s download/7000 Kbit/s upload for CHF 95),

Fiber Power internet 50 (50 000 Kbit/s download/5000 Kbit/s upload for CHF 85) and

Fiber Power internet 10+ (10 000 Kbit/s download/5000 Kbit/s upload for CHF 59).

Apologies if this has already come up, but a search here and on the internet yielded few details about this service. Does anyone have more details?

Has anyone switched to this yet? If so, did it require a different box in your house (different than the cablecom cable internet box you already have)? Finally Cablecom is charging a bit of a premium for this service if you look at the download speeds versus their non "fiber power" offerings. Besides increased upload speeds...what's the difference?

Yes, a new box is required.

The Fibre Power runs on EuroDOCSIS 3.0, the other services are on EuroDOCSIS 2.0. The new version of DOCSIS allows much higher bandwidths through bundling of more downlink channels.

So a EuroDOCSIS 3.0 compatible box is needed.

I saw one in the cablecom shop the other day: the new box for Fiber Power is black, and made by Motorola (the old ones are Scientific Atlanta)

So very different. Slightly bigger, because they are gruntier.

So if you change to any "Fiber Power" service you'll get a new box sent to you.

The difference in speed is the difference! More speed costs most money:

0.25M = 5.-

2M = 34.-

10M = 49.-

10M+ = 59.-

25M = 75.-

50M = 85.-

100M = 95.-

The prices look like what you'd expect. 10M+ is more than 10M because 10M+ has 5M upload speed, whereas 10M has just 1M upload speed.

Remember: the older boxes cannot go faster than 25M, that's the limit of DOCSIS 2.0

So if you want the best fastest cutting-edge stuff, get the Fiber Power (but note: check your address, not available in all homes yet)

Quick update. I upgraded that Friday online and received the new cable modem promptly on the following Tuesday.

Unfortunately that is basically where it ends as it still does not work. I have been on the phone with cablecom people a few times and finally last Friday someone investigated deeply enough to find out that there was a configuration problem in their systems that prevents the new cable modem from working (the modem had not been "authorized").

That person opened a ticket to have someone address the problem and said it would be fixed yesterday. Of course I tried the modem again last night and it didn't work. I just spoke with customer service again and they told me at least a week more.

So, a warning: for me, this upgrade has been anything but a seamless process. The only saving grace is they did not "deauthorize" my existing/old modem yet so I still have phone and internet access in the interim.

Just noticed today that Cablecom have launched 10, 50 and 100Mb fibre optic connections for residential customers http://www.cablecom.ch/en/index/inte....htm?setlang=4

Anyone thinking of upgrading? I'm on the 25000/2500/75CHF connection at the moment, so a mere 10 CHF extra for 50000/5000 is too good to miss for a doubling od downloads speed, and that all-important (for me anyway) juicy upload bandwidth.

The upgrade did not go well on Cablecom's end. It required a new modem with caused unending problems with provisioning. It took 6-8 calls with their support folks to get things reasonably somewhat straightened out. I still cannot receive phone calls with my Cablecom digital phone.

The speed is great. The frustration is not.

EDIT - Hmm your phone issues don't sound good... I use mine a lot so if it's down i'll be massively irked.

Has been there for a while. I only just upgraded to 10K/1000/CHF49 and that's pretty good for torrents. I could use better upload for flickr. How do you find your 25k/2.5K; do you actually get that?

For gaming, the lag is important as not much traffic is used. Haven't had the chance to check that yet.

Yeah cable is in general really good for hitting max speeds vs regular ADSL that i've had before... though the UK is crap anyway for internet. I always hit good download speeds and max upload speeds with my 25MB connection, but could always do with more for photo uploading etc.

Torrents never hit max speeds in general but that's the nature of them... been thinking of signing up to a good newsgroup site as they're cheap and my friend says he always maxes out his connection.

What gaming do you do just out of interest?

This was my speed test after the upgrade. Not perfect, but not bad. Maybe that will give you an idea about latency.

My favorite thing about Cablecom is billing in English so even my phone issues don't get me too upset with them.

jrs: According to Cablecom's website you get 2 dynamic public IPs, but that is the case for almost all their plans.

Rich: Link to test results here . 23 mbps down and a solid 5mbps up. The link does not tell you, but my ping was 62-67ms across a few tests.

I also tried running the SpeedTest.net's test to their London partner and got about the same ping, but 2x faster down speed. SpeedTest has this service called "PingTest" now and I tried that to Coventry and got the following:

It is not clear what is required to get a "A", but I get the idea that you are knowledgeable enough about this to make your own conclusions given the ping and jitter figure.

EDIT: I just did the test with the closest Zurich server and I get 15ms with 2ms jitter and still got a B grade. It seems that I need to run a Cat5 cable to their ping test server to get a A grade.

Thanks for the link - I am on a plan that gives me 4 IPs ... I might lose two I suppose were I to "upgrade" to Fiberpower.

Interesting... the server they use must be a bit slow if you only get 2.8mb/s download speeds. The upload is sick though.
