Calls from 'Stadt Bern' sincere?

Not really sure if this belongs here but in the last week and a half I've had 4 or 5 calls on the house phone from different people not sounding professional, if I can say that, who have been saying I have applied for a green bin, which I haven't and then when I have said I haven't they have said ok we will take you off the list, yet they have still called. It might sound strange but i heard noise outside my apartment door today and then I moved around and made a bit of noise and then i heard someone as though they were creeping into the elevator, shortly afterwards I got another call. Am I being paranoid or has anyone else experienced anything like this? Is there a number I can call to find out who called me? Like in England with 1471?

Hope I'm not being dramatic! But better to be safe than sorry!

Thanks!

Can't you simply note the number of whoever is calling you and look it up using the online directory?

I suspect from the OP's description that the caller did not leave a caller ID so there is nothing to look up. To take this further may mean asking the phone company if they have any records and can identify the caller - might be difficult.

Otherwise one potential solution is to ask the caller (if they call again) which institution they call from, then identify the institution and call back via whatever legit/registered landline phone number they have and to verify the issue is real.

Or, finally, if you have a concern with personal safety, even if a vague one, one can always talk to the police who can advice on the best route to take.

I can't see the number who called me on the house phone :S is there a way of seeing which number called?

Those are great suggestions, thanks so much, I'll be sure to ask if they call again!

Hopefully it's nothing

I would like to think that Stadt Bern would not be witholding their caller ID.

You can't see it becasue your phone doesn't have that functionality, or it is being witheld?

If your phone has a display it will usually show the callers number. The caller can suppress that functionality, but as a general rule only a dubious caller would do that, certainly not anybody honestly calling in the name of a public entity.

This page says you can call 031 321 79 09 for any questions regarding "green" (biological) waste. I'd say call there and ask if you're on their list for delivery of a green bin. Have them strike you off, inform the police if you're not on it.

Sometimes yes, but this depends if your phone/handset has this feature (does it have a numeric display? what kind of phone is it?) which sometimes is hard to find (on our Siemens it's a three key press to get to last call...)

Most likely they won't, yes. Overall the calls do sound rather dodgy, but it's hard to tell.

That doesn't hold true in all cases, especially not with certain institutions/firms with a complex phone system.

A friend works in a Swiss company and his calls from his office to my private phone never reflect his number, but just a series of 999999s, or the word "calling", even though my phone can recognise and display the number of other incoming calls.

Although I guess one could perhaps argue that a large Swiss bank is "a dubious caller"....

That's why I said "as a general rule".

But frankly I don't care - if a business uses such crappy infrastructure I'm not interested in wasting my time to find out about their product quality.

I doubt someone would call from Stadt Bern without giving the department they're from. Next time make a note of their name. All personnel are listed on the website.

Yes you are paranoid

Just tell them to send you a letter in the mail. If they are genuinely from the government, I'm sure that would be no problem. Actually, all my dealings with the government are almost always via mail and hardly ever via phone.

I'll bet you it's the old "We're calling to give you advice on Health Insurance" scam.

It's illegal to cold call to sell Health Insurance, so instead they cold call to offer free advice. Which is that you buy their Health Insurance.

I've had them call me, and they always claim to be calling in an official capacity. But it's normally obviously coming from a callcentre.

They also spoof the caller ID to make it appear as if they are calling from within Switzerland.

Hang up on them, or even better, hand the phone over to a passing toddler. My 4 year old loves talking to them.

Actually its not sometimes to sell the Insurance. They are " middle men " and they sell the names of the interested customers to the best buyer ( usually insurance) . Then the insurance company contacts the customer and arranges a meeting ( advice )
