Can I use my satellite decoder for the new TNT?

Swiss TV channels are moving to digital service (TNT in French) at the end of June, and won't be available any more as analog on the terrestrial antenna. Our TV's don't have integrated decoders, but we do have a satellite decoder. Is it possible to hook up both the terrestrial antenna and satellite's coax. to the same decoder? The decoder that I have has only 1 coax. input. Is there some kind of adapter that would allow this setup?

An alternative is to fork out 50 francs as a one-time fee and get a decoder card to watch Swiss TV on satellite. Nice of them to ask us to pay (again: in addition to the 400+ francs annually to Billag) to watch local TV on satellite!

you'll pay 65 for the Swiss card, not 50. And it gives you SF1,2, TSI1,2, TSR1,2 and SFInfo only.

A cable TV decoder will not work with a satellite input and vice versa. I don't quite understand what you have - please tell me specifically which box and model you have.

Thanks for the confirmation on the price of the access card for Swiss channels.

My satellite box is a real cheapo: Phonotrend SDR6800. It has 2 (ViaAccess?) card slots.

2 VIA card slots - does it have a wider slot too? CI slot is what it's called.

What you want is to get a dish and monoblock LNB - then you can get everything from Astra1 at 19east and Hotbird at 13east (including Swiss channels there) and you'll have everything free and everything you can decrypt.

Actually I just verified with my wife: it has 1 card slot and 1 CI (big slot).

I didn't explain that we already use it for free-to-air satellite viewing with no problem.

I just wanted to know if there was any possibility to use it for TNT. Otherwise, if we opt to buy a TNT decoder, it'll mean another decoder device beside the TV and the DVD: a nice little collection of power-consuming and space-occupying hardware. Maybe it's time to buy a new TV with integrated TNT decoder.

Do you mean Turner Network Television or Télévision Numérique Terrestre

Télévision Numérique Terrestre

Must confess my lack of usefulness in terms of getting something out of our (well, the house's) satellite dish - box combo. The dish points at Hotbird and Astra, however somehow most channels appear as pay-to-view, not FTA (including the swiss ones).

What is it I'm doing wrong?

The Swiss channels are not free-to-air. To view them on satellite you must pay 65 francs to the SRG (Swiss government broadcasting). It's a one-time fee, and they supply you with the access card.

Thanks! For the others, what content provider do you use - I tried TPS but they require a French address...

There's information on the subject of satellite subscriptions ("abonnement" in French) elsewhere in this forum. Good luck.

Shorrick, you want a decent CAM mate. Like a super T-Rex + loader + loader card

Indeed :-D

I would have sold you mine had I not had the need for it again

If you do get one, I can introduce you to the dark side. Sorry, my mate can.

Charvel - if you don't have a French address, looks like digital cable is the only choice for you.

I believe is was Rock Lobster, not Lob Rockster

Check this out, lots of usefull information on TNT,

For the TNT to be useful to us who like to watch CSI in English from the Italian TSI channel, can anyone verify if these are shown in dual language and which receiver can play dual?

I checked Media Markt and all the receivers were mono only, therefore not able to play the English version. Waste of money and time if dual cannot be played.

Media Markt is spinning you a yarn - digital satellite receivers basically offer you access to the streams being transmitted.

But do you want TNT or are you confused? I don't understand your reference to CSI on TSI2...

Lets face it, Media Markt certainly do not specialize in these things, simply employ the under grads...or less.

The satellite idea is now running, getting our sky free to view thanks to some peoples help and selling of equipment; now, we still like to have the Swiss channels as well.

TNT (free to air Swiss channels without cable), can provide us with TSI (CSI in English), TSR, local news, etc, can be picked up with this free to air receiver and antenna, but, in the store, these normal dual channel stations over cablecom, were only received in mono by the recievers.

Not all these channels are dual all the time, but who wants to spend CHF300 on the gear only to find the dual channeling is only mono-language? Just wondering if anyone bought this technology and can confirm these facts? maybe I have to be the tester, but returning things to MM only leaves in store credit.
