Can I work in Canton Vaud and live in Geneva?

I currently work and live in Nyon (Canton Vaud), but am thinking of moving somewhere a little more....lively.

I have been told that I cannot live in Geneva, because I work in Canton Vaud and have a B-Permit. Does anyone know if this is true?

Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Vanessa

Not true as far as I know. My husband has B permit and we lived first in canton Zurich and now Bern - and in this time he worked in Zurich, Lucerne and Aargau. Never was an issue where he lives.

There is no issue working in one canton and living in another.... now, the only question is :-) for tax reasons, living in Geneva and working in Vaud does not really make any sense. Geneva is higher taxed depending on where you live + your health insurance in Geneva is way more expensive than in Vaud.

Hiya. I think you can live wherever you choose to, as long as you register yourself in the new canton when you move. My EU B permit says it's valid for all of Switzerland. The first time I came here I mentioned to a Swiss girl that I found Zurich too... dead. She laughed and assured me I was in the liveliest spot of the country... It has livened up since then though...

There is one more question...wanting to live somewhere 'more lively' as in the initial post.

A good question but I am not sure about the tax issue. I understand that if your income is "modest", Geneva can be more interesting that Vaud. I agree that if your income is higher then Vaud is better.

I can't comment on the health insurance. Best to go to the Comparis website and put in your details for a postal code in VD and one in GE and see what happens.

Thanks for all the information - wow this is a good way to find out info quickly.

I am considering moving to either Geneva or Lausanne, so wanted to check out what I have been told - Geneva is closer for work/ airport, but I know more people in Lausanne = livelier!

One other point I heard on another board is that if you change cantons while on a B permit you restart on the five years needed to move to a C permit.

I do not know if this is fact but it would be worth checking before any changes between cantons.

I doubt that very much. Whenever I read stuff about that it just says you need to be resident of Switzerland for five years. The "Kantönligeist" is big in this country, but not that big...

Hello

I am French and I am about to apply for a B permit.

My boyfriend leaves in Bienne.I am going to work in Geneva and planning to live with my b/f in Bienne. Now question : am I able to register for a B permit in Bienne where I am going to live or do I have to register in Geneva where I will work ?

Thanks, Julia

Thats true as your company is located there. However I have seen cases where if a canton where you currently live recommends to the canton where you dont work, then they can give you the registration. Also your company may be able to help you.

Assuming you are responding to this:

then your advice is incorrect.

A French citizen has the right to live in any Canton and registers where they live, not where they work. Furthermore, the company has nothing to do with it.

No - that's not true. I moved between cantons and still got mine after 5 years.

Reg. the original post: This used to be true several years ago (when I first came to CH you could not move between cantons easily - really made me feel like a 2nd class citizen), but isn't anymore. Now you're free to live wherever you like....

Hello everyone, just wanted to thank you all for your answers. It helped a lot !

Hello

I was just looking up about living in Vaud, Nyon and working in Geneva. I am moving to Nyon next month. Am I correct in saying that I am taxed in the canton where I live. The reason I ask is that I mentioned to HR today that I was moving and asked about the tax situation. I was told that as the company is based in Geneva I would be taxed in Geneva. However after reading some posts it would seem that I should be taxed at the Vaud rates. Can anyone confirm this?

Kind regards
