Can you make american size sheets fit european mattresses?

Hello there

I seem to remember reading about Americans who moved to the UK and then to CH or viceversa. For those who hopefully have experience or know the answer, could you please tell me if there is absolutely NO WAY to make american size bed sheets fit into UK or European size matresses? I know the sizes vary by few inches, but I am wondering if the extra room on american deep-fitted sheets can fit somehow? Just too much money invested in good sheets to throw it away...

Depends on the sizes in question. I have a set of US double sheets that fit a UK double bed - just. But our UK mattress is thinner than most. I don't know if it would work on a traditional sprung mattress. US Queen would fit a UK double with no problem in my opinion. No idea about other sizes though.

It seems that all Continental mattresses are a standard 2.0m long. Twins and Doubles in the other three places are a little shorter at 1.9m so that could be a problem.

I think I still have Twin-Extra Long linens from my university days somewhere so I hope I'll be all right using them with a Twin bed in Switzerland.

What size is a "king"? You can find many sizes of sheets including flat sheets that are up to 240x270 and duvet covers that are 240x240 at the Manor. Beds can be as large an 200x210 (or even 220). So you can find the bed linens for them. I've rarely seen them at the cheaper stores and never on sale! I never bother looking for fitted sheets anymore and just use flat ones.

FYI, I bought a 160 cm x 200 cm mattress and it works fine with my Queen size fitted sheets. It is sooooo nice to have a bed again!

Yes, King Sheets work on the 180 cm wide beds. I know because I brought some from the States for my bed--'cause I like having a flat sheet, y'all.

Meanwhile though, someone needs to poke me next time I go back to the US and remind me to pick up a few sheet sets. I figure even if they're not perfect, getting a little extra large (queen instead of double for example) should work with some judicious application of mattress suspenders. (I do so miss my sheet sets!)

Well, I'm a square little rule follower! They told me to look for old threads before posting new ones And, it's Switzerland so who knows what the penalties are for transgression.

The only thing I would do differently next time is get a queen flat sheet and a king fitted sheet for my 180 cm bed.

Life without flat sheets makes me too sad!

UK bed sizes were traditionally specified in feet and inches, though metric bed sizes are becoming commonplace. I guess "Super King" is the UK size? Is that what you're saying, Odile?

I'm talking about the American King size (inches y'all) which is equivalent to 180 cm.

Yes, the only reason I would consider getting a queen flat sheet is because we bought a box style frame (here) and the king sheet creates a ton of overhang that isn't aesthetically appealing to me. I think the queen flat would tuck in more easily.

Look at the size chart I linked in above. I never knew that a King size is different in UK and US. UK 5' x 6'6 US 6'4 x 6'8 (which is similar to UK SuperKing 6' x 6'6). Struuuf.

I also love having a flat sheet over me, especially in the warm months. (I just don't understand how anyone can sleep with a duvet in the summer!). There is just nothing like crawling under a nice, cool sheet on a warm summer night.

Our "Swiss" bed here is 160 x 200, and I've ordered online or brought back with me quite a few different Queen-sized sheet sets from the US, and I've never had a problem with any of them not fitting. And of course, they're much less expensive than the rather small selection of flat sheets that you'll find at Manor.

Side note for my fellow Americans: Both JCPenney.com and Overstock.com sell good-quality sheet sets and offer International shipping.

Would a 150x200cm blanket fit on a north american queen size bed? Also would a 150x200cm duvet and sheets fit on a north american queen size bed?

I have more of a problem with Pillow case sizes here.. no simple standard, queen or king. But all sizes from tiny to extra big. Bought a sheet set and pillow cases are size of very small sofa throw pillows while others are so unbelievable big. Also in summer get rid of the duvets and just use the duvet covers.. same as a sheet.

A 150 x 200 duvet is for a single bed!
