Canada goose coats - any good? Where to buy?

I was thinking about buying a Canada Goose parka/coat.

Does anyone have first hand experience with their products? Any good? Keep you warm? Good quality?

Also where is the best/cheapest place to buy?

Living in Basel I would have the option to pop over into Germany or France.

I have never heard of Canada goose coats but I do have a jacket with duck down. That is very warm so I guess that goose would be similar

They're standard winter dress in Zurich for people who think it is 15c colder than it actually is!

Last year 12 people died from heat exhaustion when they didn't take their Canada Goose jacket off on the train.

No first hand experience, but they were a staple in Toronto. I know they are very warm, kept my friend cozy in our very cold winters in Toronto. But they are also very expensive so you have to decide if it's worth it... for typical winters here that I've experienced so far, they don't seem necessary, but would be comfortable. From what I've heard they're good quality.

I've had my Canada Goose coat for about 7 years now, and it's lovely and warm, even when the temperatures dropped to -20.

It does make you notice how chilly your legs are though.

Definitely not a coat for a vegan. It's mainly made of poultry and coyote.

A word of warning (and I won't post videos, easily found on the net- and horrific)- goose down is 'harvested' from factory farmed geese, mostly in Eastern Europe- where the feathers and down are pulled violently from the bird, alive- the process is repeated severalo times over a birds lifetime. I wouldn't wear one personally however light and warm they are. Same goose down duvets and pillows, etc.

A word of warning, do your chuffing research before engaging in unnecessary scare-mongering... http://www.canada-goose.com/ca/en/faq/faq.html#

I had no idea Canada Goose was a brand. My advice was about goose down in general, but thanks.

Post #3, clearly linked for you...

Google Shopping gives:

Canada Goose Borden Bomber

CHF1,090.00 from Stromberg

All I can say is OMG, or possibly F**K - I'll stick with my regular down

Edit: seems the UK clothing store beginning FC falls foul of the profanity filter, rather spoiling the pun.

Yes they aren't even remotely cheap, but they are the best and the materials reflect that... real fur lining on the hood too. They are a long-term investment, but only worth it if you will really get use out of them.

Get a cashmere / silk pullover and a good wool blazer. An umbrella if it rains.

Way more elegant.

Layers and layers are your friend.

My parka is nice and warm and comes out when it is very cold and/ or very windy. It is not waterproof (but is water repellent), so I do not use if it is snowing (a bit of light snow is alright, though). The fact that it is not waterproof was a bit of a deterrent, but in the end, I am glad I went for it (it is certainly windproof ;o)).

Also note that most shops do not carry a big stock (it's bloody expensive), and so you may have to call the stockists before you venture to DE or FR.

And lastly don't buy online! There are too many fakes around and their sizes are a bit of a gamble - in some models, I could fit in a size S, but in others it was M and even XS!

They were on sale in Globus for 999 CHF. Great for north America....

I was standing outside a bar in Geneva the other night and 8 out of 10 people surrounding me were wearing a Canada Goose jacket.

I think I'll pass on this.

Our daughter swears by her canada goose jacket (Mum and Dad paid for it ). My BH ordered me a down geox jacket on Zalando Lounge - great value and it is brilliant

Harris Tweed

My-Store have them on special from time to time and at very good prices. I checked and no sale at the moment.

You might want to sign up for their email if you are not in a real hurry (yes I know winter is coming).

Really -- Do you need such a coat for day to day life?

Unless you are going to the south pole or you just want a fashion accessory it's completely uneccessary.

I see people with them everyday, like Mr StayPuffed and it's 10 degrees outside!

Indeed, just goes to show that you shouldn't generalise...

North Face have a similar policy, and I imagine that most "brands" are similarly aligned.
