Cancelling health insurance without a new insurance

Hi all!

I know that tomorrow (30th November) is the deadline to cancel my old health insurance, but is this possible even if I do not yet have a new one? Do you know if the deadline to get a new one is also tomorrow or is the end of the year? On Comparis I read it is the end of the year but am not sure if it is true and would like to avoid the old insurance to refuse my cancellation.

Thanks!

Comparis says the previous krankenkasse needs confirmation that you have a new one or they might refuse the change, but if you do terminate prior having a new one, you have to send them confirmation that you have a new one at the latest by December 30. So I guess it is possible although you might have to follow up asap. It is also confirmed here https://www.priminfo.admin.ch/it/beratung/wechsel

However if the deadline is tomorrow how can you be sure the termination letter arrives on time?

Yes. Cancel now, provide a new one by December 31 (mind the holidays, better not wait until the last moment).

I did that a couple years ago. Canceled in November, ended up deciding to stay but with a different model, and informed them about it late in December. You can't have any open bills, otherwise they can't let you leave.

What is the reason for cancellation?

Letter needs to arrive today and you need a new one by Dec 31st - feels like a lot of stress and depending on your reason to cancel, may not be worth it.

Are you trying to change complementary also? If so you should never cancel before a new one has accepted you or you may loose coverage all together.

In case that is what you are trying to do: you are too late for that. Supplementary insurance needs to be cancelled by the end of September. its only the basic one that you can cancel until today.

Thank you very much everyone for confirming that the deadline is in december! (to who was wondering it was about the basic insurance)

Thanks for the priminfo link. I had seen only the Comparis text indeed.

For the mandatory insurance:

You can notify the cancelation without a new insurance.

BUT you must provide evidence of the new insurance to the old company before end of the year. Your new company may take care of that or not, but it's your responsibility.

If you don't provide your old insurance company with proof of the new insurance by the end of the year, they will automatically extend your insurance.

The 'old insurance' probably won't even inform you that they had extended it until you receive their invoice, typically 3 months into the year. (dirty practice if you ask me,,, but it's ok with the law).

Even if you got a new insurance, if you failed to notify the old one, 'the old one' will be extended automatically by your old insurance company.

No it's not a dirty practice, it is there to stop people avoiding paying an obligatory insurance.

The rules are clear, you state them yourself, and you still need a valid insurance so failure to provide proof of insurance results the the old one remaining valid.

Very clever law, prevents evaision, depsite best efforts
