Does anyone know if a landlord is actually required by law to cancel an existing UPC cable connection for a tenant who asks?
From my reading of the various info about it, the landlord is required to stop charging the tenant for the connection if they do go ahead and cancel it, but I didnt find anything definite on whether the landlord had to actually cancel the contract if asked.
I am in the process of trying to get my UPC connection cancelled, and the landlord stated that the cable costs were in the lease contract I signed (which I just signed, before realising how crap the UPC tv-only no internet connection was. He also stated that UPC provides connections for the whole building, does that mean there is no specific contract for my apartment?
Seems like there should be regulations about such cable connections, otherwise UPC could give kickbacks to landlords for forcing their tenants to pay for a service they dont want.
Anyway, Im hoping to get info on what rights I might actually have if the landlord tries to stop me from cancelling the cable connection (and thus dragging 480Fr a year out of me for a shitty service).
That was the first thing I did, and the last time I want to speak with them. They said I would have to get the landlord to cancel the contract, and establish a new contract myself. If the landlord is their customer then I assume I don"t have much power when trying to deal with them, other than to try to get the landlord to cancel it. That is where I was unsure of whether I actually have the right to force them to do it.
And that page only really states firmly that the landlord has to reduce the amount charged after the cancellation, not that they are bound to cancel it when I request. That might be the case, but from my reading of that page (which I had done beforehand) it was not clear about whether the landlord has to cancel it.
Read this if possible. You have to quit the cablecom connection with the Landlord in writing. There are 2 alternative forms. One where the cost are not in the rent ( separate in other costs ) and the other when they are included in the total rent. You will find the two forms for this if you scroll down the page.
I tried to get that 2mbps internet when I called, they said I couldnt access that internet anymore unless I already had one of their modems, otherwise I would have to do the whole cancel then reconnect thing, and get their Connect plan. The principle of them disabling access to their basic service in an attempt to force me into a new contract is infuriating, so Im against going with UPC simply out of stubbornness now!
Thanks, I will do this if the landlord is stubborn, they already suggested that the cable was in my contract, implying I am held to the rental contract. Hopefully we can keep it on good terms, I dont know how forceful to be in a different country.
Write them a registered letter with all the detail of your conversation with them and insist of having the basic internet and telephone installed, you will surely have a positive answer in a few days
Upon reflection I realised I could make do with slower mobile internet (with a month to month contract), and avoid upc, with the added benefit of having them seal up the cable sockets and angle at avoiding the tv billag (saving close to 300Fr a year).
There is something about being forced to pay for TV that I dont watch that gets me all angry in the blood.
