Canton change on conversion from L to B permit

Dear Forum members,

I belong to Non-EU states and currently hold an L permit which expires towards the end of the 2016(completion of 24 months, non extendable).

I work in an multinational IT company with the L-Permit for a specific Client/Project/Location. The client is a well known Swiss company. Work Permit and Residence permit are both based in Zurich.

In agreement with my emplyoyer, I am planning to file for a B permit

Questions:

- Work permit: Is it possible to change from L permit (in Zurich) to B-Permit (in another canton ex. Bern, Basel etc)

- Can I continue to stay in Zurich with a work permit in another canton ? (assuming that travel time is reasonable)

Appreciate any response which can shed some light on this topic.

You may want to check first in the forum section permits/visas as a lot of the questions were already answered?

As roegner says, these questions come up a lot, but short answers are a) extremely unlikely and b) if you ask both cantons to approve it, assuming you get the B permit.

a) is unlikely because it’s laid down in the Foreign Nationals Act that for L permit holders there must be a break between permit applications and during that time the permit holder is expected to leave Switzerland and can only be considered for a new permit after an unspecified period. It’s probably going to be very more difficult as the new application is with a different canton.

First question is interesting.. Looking forward for answers from experts.

And 2nd, As and when your B permit application gets approved by federal authorities, you would get a letter of approval with a line stating "Provided your residing canton approves for your residence". So, both cantons should approve (one to work and the other to stay).

Why permit in Bern? Is your future employer in Bern or is there a change in your work location?

Sorry, did not understand from your post. First you said, non extendable and then you wrote in agreement with employer, planning to file for B. I always thought its employer who should file an application and not the employee. Is it not the case?

Yes, that is the case IamMG. As this will effectively be a new application the employer has to make the application.

Thank you for your kind response Medea Fleecestealer
