Canton Zurich drops teaching of French in primary school, English wins

Yes, I did watch the video. Yet, the same problem (bad curriculum) could also explain the bad results in maths, in history, and in any other subject (like German). The problem is not the French per se, it is the way it is taught - like in the XIX century…which, given the current AI possibilities, it is a real pity…

Stop teaching grammar! Teach conversation … like how to ask for directions in Neuch …

The federal council has now become involved in this debate and is contemplating introducing a law making it obligatory for cantons to teach a second national language in primary schools.
They are apparently somewhat perturbed by the proposed actions of some of the German speaking cantons.

The Federal Council is flexing.

Dispute over early French - Federal Council wants to enforce second language at primary schools

  • The Federal Council wants to adapt the language law for this. It has sent a corresponding bill into consultation.
  • The Federal Council is thus responding to efforts by various German-speaking cantons to remove French from the curriculum.
