Trying to work something out! So any help or advice is greatly appreciated!
I've been looking at cars to purchase in switzerland and have a query about Car Insurance!
I have built up something like 6 or 7 years no claims discount here in the UK. Does that count for anything in Switzerland?
If I decide to come back to the UK I assume after 2 years i lose my no claims which is really annoying! is there anything I can do to have these qualify cross border?
I got the maximum no claims discount here in Switzerland -- basically, it's transferable. All you need to do is get a letter from your UK insurer stating that you have the maximum no claims discount and for how long (also stating your claim history, if any -- or more relevantly, if none). Give it to your new insurer in CH and you're set.
Same applies if/when you move back to the UK. Most British insurers will honour your foreign no claims discount.
I've moved between countries (and continents) several times and always retained/transferred my no claims discount.
Depending on the exact details, we could give you full protected no claims from such a record and issue a statement when you left Switzerland. The system is very different here 'tho.
I am head of the Expat division of Zurich and would gladly explain the system to you and look at your case if wish.
You can PM me or mail me directly if you'd like from this link:
I have 5 years of no claim discount in Axa, Irleand. Do you know if they will honor this bonus in axa-winterthur? Does anyone have some experience with them in CH?
They honoured my 8/9 years no claims when I got my insurtance. I'm with Axa Winthur. I wonder if that's the same Axa as yours? May make it easier to port your no claims here?
In the UK though after 2 years the no claims you have built up are lost. So if and when I go home I will be starting from scratch regardless of 9 years no claims in the UK and now nearly a further 2 here in Switzerland. Annoying!!!
Strange. I cannot edit my own comments and I have to make several of them in a row...Anyway, in Ireland you won't lose anything but I don't have plans to return there
Personally, I have used AXA Winterthur for years and have made several claims against my different policies. No complaints regarding the service and settlements received.
The one thing to remember is that NCD is expressed differently here, so you need to make sure are absolutely clear. 70% NCD in the UK means 70% off and you pay 30% of the full premium. In CH 70% means you pay 70% of the full premium (ie not full NCD). So just make sure the confirmation letter from your current insurer is absolutely clear on that point just in case you end up talking to someone here who doesn't understand how the UK discount is expressed
