Actually there is a wonderful (Swiss) startup that works with fruits and veg, and they predict based on vodoo (machine learning), not just the pick date, but also the ripe period and when it rots.

The aim is to reduce food waste by helping retailers sell things that are about to go off first.

I saw an early demo about 2-3 years ago (with blueberries) and was VERY impressed by the technology. (They compare the algorithms results to reality to see how accurate it is)

How does that work, considering an avocado tree takes a minimum of 5 years before it fruits, unless you graft it to an existing rootstock?

Wonder if an avocado tree planted by a Palastinian in Palastine, taken over by illegal settlers becomes Israeli?

I’v e not bought an Israeli avocado in about 20 years I think. I’ve probably unknowingly eaten some though.
The Peruvian ones never failed me. I know they come a long way - but so have I once and I gotta support the country who was so welcoming to the baby of complete strangers. :slightly_smiling_face:

Btw. asparagus from Peru are super too!

No clue - I’ve given up on keeping up to date with international politics; far too depressing, and it always reports what happens in some areas, and not in others; regardless of the human impact. I mean there’s 50+ active conflicts right now, and yet whenever I accidentally turn on the news, all I hear is Ukraine, Israel and Trump.

On the food side, being brutally honest, I don’t give a flying rats behind where it comes from as long as it tastes good :stuck_out_tongue:… Everyone says theirs is best. Swiss grown potatoes are the best quality in Switzerland. UK potatoes are the best quality in the UK. etc, etc etc… then if you look at the environmental impact if our food, you just stop eating entirely. Avocado plantations destroy most of south america. Cows fart more than cars. Soya is non-native to Switzerland and is imported. Etc. It just gets depressing…

but I did grow avocados when I was younger, and HATED the length of time it took to get them to bear fruit

Seriously - do people here still think it’s ok to buy vegetables which are flown halfway around the world by aeroplane?

Especially when those vegetables grow pretty well around here.

Earlier I was thinking just what Spinal said…you can find something distasteful (pun intended) about the production/transport of almost any food product. Eliminating all of them would render our diets pretty boring. But no, I wouldn’t buy asparagus from afar, because Italian, Spanish, and French asparagus are just fine.

I think the critical thing you are missing from your statement is that there are varying degrees of distastefulness in food production/growing.

We’re all adults here and can pretty easily have some control over our buying impulses.

Didn’t she say she was born and spent some of her childhood in Peru?
Maybe she was referring to that as I don’t recall ever seeing any South American asparagus here.

When buying food, I am mostly spontaneous, I buy what looks good without planning beforehand what I will buy or checking where they came from.
Of course, there are exceptions; I don’t like the taste of local potatoes, so I look for other options like from Egypt or Cyprus.
I do get caught by globalisation when those countries have grown and supplied Swiss/German varieties.

Why is there a global conspiracy to bad-mouth avocados? I don’t get it. They taste great, are healthy, nutritious and very easy to incorporate in all kinds of dishes. If you don’t have enough water, then don’t grow them. And by the way, the Avocado capital of the world is Katikati, lots of strangely alternative people there, but no drug cartels.

That’s not how global supply works these days.

As I quoted above regarding avocados:-

To meet demand, Petorcan plantations are installing illegal pipes and diverting water from rivers to irrigate their crops. That diverted water is leaving villages in the region in drought conditions.

Importers/buyers need to do a lot more to ensure their supply chain is not destroying land or communities along the way.

I’m not sure how they manage to make them so unpalatable either.

I buy them but they could do so much better.

I was a bit surprised that green asparagus from Mexico are only 10 or 20% less expensive in Mexico compared to the same product from the same farm(s) I find in a Coop in Aargau.

So we’re not supporting them, is that what you’re saying?
