Possibly one to ignore.
It ain't that bad. In fact, I've seen much worse.
Going into the film, it's important to be aware that it's based on an 80s musical. That means the songs are typical of that time and the plot is basically a competition on which cat will be blessed with the opportunity to start a better life. If you remember seeing the musical, you'll have an easier time following the film. In fact, originally I really had no idea what the musical was about but it all becomes a bit clearer on the big screen.
You see lots of CGI that melts people and cats together into their on screen characters. I didn't find the effects distracting at all and enjoyed watching all the wiggling of ears and odd cat-like movements. Of course, be ready for lots of singing and dancing which is all set in London. Each main character has an introduction through a song which is fine but I found the second half to be much better than the first half as other things finally happen. Victoria, the cat, is sublime in her role and is the key cat that threads everything together.
Judi Dench looks like Queen Victoria in the Wizard of Oz's lion suit but it works.
Unfortunately, the songs aren't catchy and their could be more momentum and energy. I'm not a fan of Rebel Wilson's acting and Taylor Swift's new song fits in well with the musical, which means that's probably the only place you'll hear it.
All inall, I found the film surprisingly quite good. Certainly much better than the reviews will lead you to believe. So if you're on the fence, go for it. It's a bit of a blast from the past mixed in with today's visual effects.
