Ceiling of a tunnel collapses between Riddes and La Tzoumaz

Boy, this is going to cause problems.

"Part of the ceiling of a road tunnel in Isérables, in the municipality of Riddes (VS), collapsed early Saturday evening. There were no casualties. The tunnel is expected to remain closed for months, if not longer. A diversion has been put in place.

“It was not a concrete ceiling that fell because it was a tunnel dug into the rock,” a spokesperson for the Valais police told Keystone-ATS on Sunday, confirming information on the blick.ch website.

The head of the mobility department visited the site on Sunday morning. He estimates that the tunnel will remain closed for months, “if not perhaps years”. Analyses still need to be conducted, adds Mr. Pélissier, quoted in Le Nouvelliste.

The official believes that the unprecedented bad weather in December added to the mild weather of the last few days would play a role in the collapse. And the tunnel, which is more than 50 years old, was dug “into a geologically complex cliff.”

The tunnel connects Isérables to La Tsoumaz, above the Mayens-de-Riddes. A diversion has been set up but heavy vehicles cannot use it, the police spokesman said. The restriction primarily affects the inhabitants of the region."

.....drive up the road on Google Streetview to take a look at the tunnel portal and the state of the ceiling.

A few weeks ago I almost booked an accomodation in La Tzoumaz for the sport holidays, but changed my mind at the last moment and booked elsewhere. 😀

"New measures to improve access to Isérables and La Tzoumaz

In view of the white week that starts this weekend in several French-speaking cantons, the municipality of Riddes (VS) has taken new measures to improve access to Isérables and La Tzoumaz. Last Saturday, part of the vault of a tunnel collapsed, blocking the direct route from the plain.

Two new car parks for users of the cable car from Riddes have been opened, bringing the number to six. There will also be free shuttle buses between Riddes SBB station and the cable car departure on weekends. This system will be renewed for the next two weekends, starting on Friday afternoon, the municipality said in a statement on Friday evening.

Bus connections between Isérables and La Tzoumaz are still available. Until 25 February, all public transport between Riddes gare and La Tzoumaz is free. As already announced, a diversion has been set up to access Isérables and La Tzoumaz by road from the plain, and to descend.

All the detailed information on these facilities can be found on a website created for the occasion: www.riddes.ch/horaires . They can also be found on the website and mobile application of the municipality of Riddes and on the website of La Tzoumaz."
