Celling wires

HI, I just moved into my first apartment (ZH) and i have trouble fixing 2 lamps. How should I connect the wires?

Very carefully. Most likely the yellow is the neutral line and brown is live.

There seems to be no earth in the socket, which means you shouldn't install the lamps in these places.

If you don't know what you're doing and how to test for this, get in an electrician.

NO

The 'problem' in Switzerland is they use switched sockets and the 'LIVE' can be any colour except Dark blue (yes, even light blue can be live/switched).

My guess is the Blue is Neutral, the yellow switched live.

If you don't know what you are doing, please call an electrician.

If you do, do you have a meter, or an electrical screwdriver (lights up when held on a live wire)

Trial and error. If you do as I did. I only once blew out the fuses in the entire apartment block.

YES.

I rented a house a few years ago that was owned by the village electrician. When I went to replace an outside lamp I found live and neutral were both yellow.

BUT

Usually the wires are properly colour coded, but not always. Hence the phrase " most likely ".

My son once took out the fuse a railway carriage. Such was his interest he now has a masters in physics.

The first place we lived in literally every room had different coloured wiring. Just switch off at the fuse box and see what works when you switch it back on!

Yellows are NEUTRAL and any other dark colors are LIVE.

You can grab a voltage detector and find out. In a new building NEUTRAL should be BLUE though.

Also remember to connect both NEUTRAL wires, or other sockets may not work

Thank you for your inputs everyone.

The landlord came by so I asked about this. Brown were live, yellow - neutral. I turned off the breakers and installed all of them. My new home is no longer dark

And if a wire comes off one of the terminals inside the metal lamp housing then the housing will be live and touching the housing could kill someone (perhaps the next occupants after you have left?)

Is that why you used the electrocution emoji?:
