Dear All,
Not sure if this has been discussed before, but i find this could be an interesting topic for all tax payers:
1. My wife and I are both working and paying withholding tax separately by our employer. The rate is around ~13%.
2. Now Geneva authority is imposing us at a rate of ~17% (C0). I assume this is because we are living together so the income is summed up. This brings an extra bill of ~5000 CHF.
So is this reasonable? Can we try to argue with Geneva authority?
Many thanks in advance!
Yes it's reasonable, yes you can try.
(Why is Geneva taxing you when your location is Basel?)
Married couple get taxed on combined income.
This is normal.

Barème C seems to be correct for double earners. It should be applied for each income separately. You can request to be subject to ordinary taxation (tax at source will still be levied as a pre-payment)

Thank you for the answer. I am contacting the Geneva authority now.
p.s. We've moved to Basel in 2020 but still got this bill. I guess they will chase after me until the end of the world.
Wives are expensive, well known fact
Get rid of the wife, the only solution.
And yes it’s a problem the authorities have promised to fix, but nobody can figure out how.
Thank you all for the comments.
I understood the summed income comes with a higher rate of tax, but what i still do not get, is what's the purpose then of the original withholding tax, which are already at C0 (married and both working). Can't it just be deducted already monthly by our employer?
