Garage told me the old battery was going. So, to save a few 100 franks, decided to DIY. After all, it's only a battery. What could go wrong?
Well, after hearing complaints from every electrical sensor in the car, started having second thoughts. Like RobBob, you Dit wit! So checked the car status on the multimedia console and pressed setup and did a factory reset.
Now the car seems fine. Drove it around a bit but the stop start function seems to still not work. Not that I really need this ignoring feature. However, am concerned now that the battery may be getting overcharged. On the internet have read that car has to be reeducated.
So, here're my big questions. What does one have to do to get the stop start working again? Also is there anything else that should check or done? Is a diagnostic tool necessary? If so where can get one? By the way it's a Golf 7.
Your car needs to be told about the new battery so it can charge it correctly and do things like calculate whether start/stop can safely stop the motor and restart it again. Your new battery should have a BEM code label on it (Normally a QR code) and that needs to be entered into the car's computer. You can do it if you have a OBD2 connector and software - otherwise it's a trip to the dealer (Or VW Facebook Group to find someone who'll do it for a beer)
Wow. I've changed batteries a bunch of times.. in older cars. And have never needed to 'tell the computer about the battery' . Thats completely new to me. Theres lots of OBD2 programmers out there, simple ones and more complex tuning software like HPTuners or EFILite. I use HPTuners but even in HPTuners I dont see anything that allows for the configuration of battery type. On the surface your question is one that i would have thought i could answer I know cars and engines in general pretty well. If you're anywhere near Wollerau, go see Panorama garage at the ENI petrol shed in Freienbach, talk to Niki. He'll get you squared away, at a very reasonable price, he will probably just tell you what you need to do at no price if you let him know you want to try to handle it yourself.
It is ridiculous that you cannot even change the battery in a car by yourself.
My father just ran into the same problem. Apparently, there is a set method you have to follow to change a battery, and if you do not follow it, it involves a trip to the dealer and a reprogramming of parts of the computer system/
Car computer needs to be told there's a new battery, a VW group thing. In the video below they sell an phone app and OBD2 port for that, but any mechanic should have this.
