I am looking to change Kantons, from my present one to Kanton Zurich. I assumed that with a C-permit, this would be fairly straightforward, as a C-permit holder is supposed to be able to live and work anywhere in CH.
When I tried to do it online through emzug however, I got a message that the status of my residency does not permit this move to be completed. I called the Zurich Migration office and they informed me that I would have to write them a letter explaining why I want to move to Zurich and that they would have to check if I can make this move. And then they would send me a letter with a list of documents incl debt extract, social aid details etc
Has anyone else had this experience? Can a kanton refuse to accept your move? And are there reasons for moving that can be considered unnecessary/unacceptable, like wanting to live in the city, being closer to your social circle and also as a freelancer, easier to meet new clients / network etc?
Maybe it's a bit naive of me, since I've lived in one kanton all of my time here, but I find myself surprised and a bit apprehensive about this.
Any insight would be deeply appreciated!
There are no conditions that have to be met if you want to change cantons on a C permit. There are a few which might get the permit revoked, but that means you seriously broke the law.
You can point them to articles 34, 37 and 62/63 of the Federal Act on Foreign Nationals and Integration (Foreign Nationals and Integration Act, FNIA) of 16 December 2005 (Status as of 1 April 2023)

According to the Zürich E-Umzug website , this can only be used for address changes within the Canton.
Why not just move to Zürich and register personally ?
Thank you all. I tried the E-umzug first, but it said that my residency status does not allow me to "complete the move". So, that's when I called the Migration office and they asked me what passport I had (Non-EU), and I was married to a Swiss (divorced), and then said that I had to write a letter explaining why I wanted to move, and that they would have to check if it was possible. And that the move needs approval.
Looks like if you're Non-EU and not married to a Swiss, then the kanton change is not as simple.
I anyone has had any experience with this process, would love to chat.
