Cheap market for fish or meat

Hi

I would recommend you Aligro. They have each week a kind of set of Aktion with a very good discount. What i do usually i follow their Aktion Newsletter and when i see what i like i go and buy a bit more and put it in the freezer.

Check aktionis.ch regularly. They're an aggregator for the supermarkets' special offers.

That said, if the Asian or Turkish shop around the corner has stuff you like, they may still be quite a bit cheaper.

Do you genuinely believe that the high Swiss prices are caused by animal welfare laws? I don't. Id happily pay for that but I just don't buy that argument at all. But I am happy to get educated: In which way are Swiss chicken kept better than French ones exactly? And why does this cost a pretty hefty sum?

(Or could it be that the protective tariffs on meat import make for great profits for the Swiss meat industry and their chicken have the same factory life like they do in all "developed" countries...?)

Protectionist aspects certainly play a role and when I do buy meat in Germany or France, I get the organic grass-fed/pastured kind and it does cause me to pause that it is essentially the same price as the "cheap" version in Migros/Coop. That still does not change the truth of my statement - irrespective of where the meat comes from.

It bothers me when people don't give a damn about how something was produced, especially when it involved a living, feeling being killed for us to eat. The veggies would obviously argue that it is better not to kill the animal in the first place, which is a valid point; however, if we can agree that we don't HAVE to eat meat for our survival and that mass farming practices have a negative impact on our climate, then there is a clear argument for eating less meat and to have this be from more humane sources than what is currently the norm.

Sure. Do you also care how your consumer products are made? Humans dying for natural resources and sweat shops with suicide prevention nets putting them together?

Or everything from chocolate to washing liquid using palm oil that has destroyed the rain forest?

Or that 10 CHF t-shirt...

The topics are endless and I find it a bit bizarre to tell an exchange student off who tries to make his life in a new country work. I very much recall trying to make ends meet in my student days and I did not care that my local Kebab was very suspiciously cheap while excellent quality (I very much assume it was a money laundering operation...not exactly ethical to support either).

I STILL know how hard it is to make ends meet and part of the equation is eating less meat.

Being vegetarian is a good option - at least during the week, you can spare enough to buy decent meat during the weekend. Alternatively, switch to sausages - there are a couple of farms near Seebach that offer local, organic, affordable meat.

Go for the meat at all cost, vegan just doesn't cut it.

Try and do your shopping late on a Friday or late Saturday afternoons as there are often discounts on the price of fresh foods due to sell by dates. You can get anywhere between 25 and 50% off in Aldi, Lidl, Coop, Migros, Denner, etc.

Zürich is a wasteland for a traditional market. The fact is that meat eaters are becoming sterile from all the hormones that they pump into each kilo of meat. Its what you would call a " natural " contraceptive. Has alot to do with planned obsolescence

Thanks, Stella, (a bit late, which is why I can't use the thanks-button anymore, I have not been back to this thread since September ).
