Children's cigarette-style chewing gum on sale!

Can't believe this, stumbled upon these in a Volg (small store chain).

I remember these in England but doubt if they sell them anymore, the more I think about it the angrier I get...why?

It is directly endorsing the real thing, no?

perfect example of (no-so-) stealthy advertisement.

it's the "get them while they're young" trick... makes you wonder who approved them for sale...

Open them & they are almost the real thing!!!

terrible!

Relax. I remember buying sweets like that when I was a kid. Also chocolate cigars and liquorice pipes. I managed to kick the habit without resorting to rehab. and I never ended up smoking

yeah same here. its only a sweet. They also do jelly babies but that doesnt immediately make children want to start having kids.

It's called Top Blend and they're filter tips! This is the most targetted effort I've ever seen to directly target children. It's glamorising smoking. I really didn't think there'd be opposing argument.

Good for you because your parents probably never smoked but if children are already exposed to the habit then they may one time decide to have a go on the real thing when they reach 15 or 16.....but who cares eh?

I remember similar in the UK but I don't remember anything this realistic - It's horrible and I have to admit it would give me a shock to see my kids with them. I guess we have to fall back on our parenting skills again and educate our children in an age appropriate way against this kind of thing.

I guess its another example of how much the UK and US have evolved in it's anti smoking attitudes and that some of Europe has differing views.

Au contraire, my Mum's been a smoker all her life. I hated the smoke when I was kid. But the yearn for the taste of chocolate and liquorice was stronger!

On the other hand maybe all those wine gums I ate were a mistake. I've often wondered why some people like wine and some can't stand the stuff. That must explain it.

Same reasons I suppose some people have lung cancer (& some have died from it) & some don't.

we used to have these in Australia many many years ago, I think they banned them. They are a bit 'naughty' if you ask me... Ive seen them in Denner.

They gave up selling those years ago at home!

I think nicotine (and whatever other junk is in cigarettes) is a very serious addiction, with many victims. It is a serious health issue though not treated as one in Switzerland, I might add.

Too serious an issue to make a fun jokey immitation and peddle them to kids.

A jelly "baby" is not in the same league.

that's nothing a friend had a friend staying here for a few days (sound dodgy I know ) and those guys who walk around pubs selling cigarettes were told she didn't smoke and offered her a starter pack!! like a special offer where she could buy one....try it out...and then maybe buy more for half price if she liked em :O what is the world coming to eh?

and as for these things....it's disgusting! I do smoke and even if I didn't I wouldn't allow my child to buy them!! it's so wrong on so many levels! it's clever advertising!!

anyone who says there is no harm in them is a smuck!

So what? They will try the real thing in any case, but probably much earlier than 15 or 16. Did you never even try??

Did I miss something? Are these sweets manufactured/marketed by the tobacco industry?

Advertising of what, by whom? How is the tobacco industry involved?

Smuck or no smuck, I can understand why some people would prefer to see these banned and I don't understand why the candy company couldn't format them to look like something else. I do however think you're getting too wound up and have got hold of the wrong end of the stick about who is behind this and what their motives are. I also think you're getting the impact of these things way out of proportion.

But smoking is one of those things that gets some people hot under the collar, for good enough reason. What's next should boys be allowed to play with toy guns?

Hot under the collar rather than rotten inside the chest. You escaped temptation, not everyone is so lucky. Kids get addicted for life fast and easy.

well lets get the candy company's to next produce little rolled bits of paper and offer it with sherbet!! let kids mimic cocaine snorting

I get where you're coming from but surely something about this makes you feel angry or at the very least uneasy!! kids walking around pretending to smoke with candy sticks of chocolate?? you can't think that is ok?

These have been around for 35 years at least, maybe longer. We also had them as kids - the point is as a kid you only find them cool when your 5 or 6, later they look a bit stupid on you. So, you likely only try your first real cigarette a few years later. I doubt very much that having eaten a cigarette shaped candy bar 5-7 years ago will make you any more likely to become addicted to tobacco once you try the first cigarette.
