Chili in adobo sauce

Hi all,

A friend of mine sent me a recipe for "chicken with tomatillos" I really like to try out but one of the ingredients is "chilies in adobo sauce". Not only a chili is used but also a teaspoon of the sauce.

What is chili in adobo sauce?

Anyone any idea where I can get it in Zürich?

Or how to substitute it?

Or has a recipe how to make it?

Thanks for any help!

El Maiz on Josefstrasse will be your best bet.

Adobo sauce is a kind of marinade made with tomatoes and spices (maybe even onions). They sell the chilis in this sauce packed in tins, I guess you can get them at the american market but not 100% sure. Good luck

Yep - get a can there. Then, you'll notice that it is some whole chilis in sauce - a good way to keep it (since it's a pricey here, relative to its cost in the US) is to puree all the contents and then keep it in a jar in the fridge. It'll last a long time and you can just take a teaspoon now and then to spice things up

Oh, and the tomatillos are going to cost, as well, so be prepared...

Chili in adobo sauce could be called "Chile Chipotle" and like Angela said it mostly with a bit of tomato, spices and bit of onion.. You can find it all blended together (chili and sauce) or the chilies in the sauce...

This chili is also amazing when added to quesadillas, blended with soup and chicken soup and so many things.. hahaha

We just decant them into a fridge container and use them as and when, no need to puree them as they're already 'pickled' so will last for weeks (or even months, when you find a tub that's been pushed to the back of the shelf and forgotten ).

We like to add one or two, chopped roughly, with some of the adobo sauce, into a pot of beans, or to make a spicy tomato salsa. The ones we get (sourced via friends from Mexico) are always chipotle chiles so also have that earthy smoky flavour and not too much heat. Yummy.

Wow, you're all so fast! Thanks for all the replies!

I'm going to try El Maiz, it's pretty close to where I live.

@Jobsrobertsharpii: tomatillos aren't a problem. I grow them myself so they are sort of "for free" (and even 100% organic, too! ). And I still have some in my freezer.
