Just took the family to Zen in Adliswil for lunch to try out the Peking duck plus 3 other dishes, a couple beers and 2dl wine. Evaluation:
Food: 7/10, the Peking duck was disappointing at 110 CHF just for the duck. It was obviously made in advance and reheated on demand, skin was more chewy than crispy, the meat stir-fried with a lot of unidentifiable vegies, was supposed to be spicey, but wasn't.
Ambiance: would be 9/10 if not for the fact that they allowed smoking and there were ash trays on every table, so I deduct 3 points...6/10.
Price: 3/10...total for lunch for 4 set me back 260 CHF, and that with a very moderate amount of wine/beer.
Would I go back? Not at those prices. By the way there is a Vietnamese restaurant, "Saigon" I believe right across the street which serves great food. Price for a full plate of mixed dishes for lunch: 16 CHF. I definitely will go back to that place.
On recommendation from this forum I had lunch at the Hot Pot on Birmensdorferstrasse, even told them I was a big fan of Chinese food, and had been to China, Taiwan, Hong Kong etc....(hint, hint, don't water down the food for me). The result: absolutely nothing special. Also, ash trays present. I wouldn't go back.
Anyone been to this restaurant http://www.fuya-waldshut.de/ in Waldshut. They apparently do a Sushi buffet for about 18Eur. They also have (according to the photos) a guy doing "La Mien" or Pulled Noodle where the guy creates noodles out of a lump of doug by hand making the noodles all 'al-dente' and cooked in tasty broth. It's a northern Chinese specialty which you didn't often see until recently. Most common Chinese food known in the west tend to be southern/Cantonese.
Anyway, if someone tries this before I do, please report!
Nagasui serves a kind of Peking duck with small northern flapjacks - a generous-enough serving at CHF38. Makes a lovely wrap with julienned veggies and sauce.
There is a another Chinese place on Zähringerstrasse (I think) just up from the "Chopstick" that I like better. They did a decent "Saigon" style noodle soup, and I don't remember if they offer a Pho (hanoi style) or not.
the Duck on their menu was not bad either. But have only been there a handful of times so can't speak to the rest of the menu.
Me and some friends checked out the dim-sum situation at Suan Long over the weekend. I have to say as an Asian, I was not disappointed. Will definitely go back there again.
They had the usual suspects on the menu, like siew mai, har gaos, lou mai gais, roast pork buns and fried wantons. Authentic enough to satisfy my dim sum cravings for a while. We also ordered the duck and fried beef noodles which were bloody fantastic!!!!
Go to the Langstrasse branch. I initially spoke to someone at the Enge branch and they mentioned that their Langstrasse branch has the biggest variety (albeit not the usual big selection that you'll get in the HKG restaurants).
I know it isn't Chinese, but avoid these trendy http://www.wagamama.ch/ restaurants at all costs. Service is very average, no English spoken (went there with a guest) supposed to be trendy interior but rather boring. Food was very, very bland and unexciting to the point of being inedible. None of us would finish their noodles, one of the worst I've ever had. Expensive for what you get too.
I like Wagamama in the UK hence I was pleased when I knew that it will be opening a branch here. But I was sorely disappointed. Like simon_ch said, the food was bland till I didnt even finish my bowl of noodles despite the fact that I was starving.
However, the waitress did notice that I didnt finish my food and asked for my feedback. When I told them that I didnt like it, we did get our drinks and my main course taken off the bill. Like wow!
Is Korea Pavilion the one we see on Tram 2?? I definitely want to try that one. Although is it a ginormous restaurant?? The building told me Yes. I have never seen so huge Korean restaurant so...
We went to the Hei Feng yesterday. Picked Hei Feng first based on the reviews on this Chinese Restaurant thread . Think I should provide some of my reviews too. I am from Shanghai, China, have spent several years in the US and now am in CH lol. I myself cook very good Chinese food of different regions in China. So here is what I think of Hei Feng
Peking Duck is really good with the crepe, cucumber, onion?, and sauce. The duck soup they have with the two person meal is also good. But I don't remember having that soup in China. The other two duck meal: sweet and sour with pineapple and duck with sprouts are maybe adapted western Chinese dish lol.
We also tried some Dim Sum and ordered one Hu Nan Beef. Not very impressed by their Dim Sum selection, I think I will have to try some other places for Dim Sum next time (Zen for example and some in Zurich Zone 10...) There are so many adapted main courses on their menu that I did not know if I should order or not which actually reminded me of the menu from Beyond Restaurant. Because I was so impressed by Beyond. I think Beyond is highly recommended for some more authentic Chinese food (the real Chinese food menu they have.)
The interior design of this Hei Feng restaurant in my opinion is way too obsolete and a little bit not very appetizing... but I think at least the Peking Duck restaurants in Shanghai are usually in a more traditional way too. In some of them the reception ladies even appear in old Dynasty costume.
Need to try Zen maybe sometime next year and see. =)
My friend from Szechuan recommended Beyond to me, but I was really disappointed with my dish. The taste wasn't authentic and it wasn't tasty at all. When I said something they told me that i'd ordered from the german menu. Next time with the right menu the food was ok, but not fantastic. So much oil that I could soak it up with a napkin. Perhaps that was a one-off.
I have tried the Dim Sum and a few mains at Zen. The food was great but the price was a little over the top for Dim Sum. The satay beef was good, so was the chicken hotpot, but the Singapore noodles were far from authentic and had Swiss-style curry sauce.
I tried a new fusion restaurant in Zug last night called Blinker The place was packed, service was great - all food arrived for the 6 of us at the same time. The spring rolls for starters were fantastic. I had the lamb shank for my main that had too much balsamic vinegar. The other dishes were better and the sushi looked great.
Another poster said that the Peking Duck is 120. Dim sum is around 14 per dish (4 pieces) up to 19 for the rice in lotus leaf (had chicken inside as well and was very big). Mains started at 36 up to 50 for beef. We would have spent a fortune if we tried to get full on dim sum, so we ordered mains as well.
I really cant agree more. Zen is overpriced for dim sum. Having only tried the dim sum @ Zen and Suan Long so far, I have to say that the quality of dim sum in Suan Long is better and definitely less pricey.
