Chubb Car Insurance ... ?

I currently live in Canada (Until December) and will be bringing my car with me to Switzerland.

It's an 2008 RS46 BMW M3. Basically, a very heavily modified car (no, not a car that some kid put a bunch of weak shit on) it's a Racing Dynamics car.

Anyways - I was wondering if anyone knew of a insurance that would cover this car, in Canada I had a very hard time because no insurance company liked that most of the parts of my car would be hard to replace/and,or/ would cost them a fortune.

I am currently covered by a insurance company called Chubb in Canada, and as they turn out, they also have insurance in Switzerland - But I think I want a new company as this insurance company doesn't allow me to go over a certain mileage every year.

Thank you!

How modified is it? If you aim to import this then you might face an uphill task as each non-OEM part will likely require a authorization and formal permission slip.

Your existing insurance may need to cover the car while on foreign plates. But on the bright side, I did a Hirsch tuning on exhaust replacement on a car some years ago and insurance went up.............12 francs.

Very, very modified -

Longitudinal front engine, rear-wheel drive

Engine 4.6-liter V8, RD Sport ECU, RD Sport intake, RD Sport exhaust

Transmission Six-speed manual

Suspension RD Sport lowering springs, Bilstein shocks and struts

Brakes Brembo six piston calipers/15-in rotors (front), Brembo four-piston calipers/14.2-in rotors

Wheels and Tires RD Sport RS46 alloys, 9.5x19 (front), 11x19 (rear) Pirelli P-Zero 265/40 (front), 305/25 (rear) I have 21 inches on right now, However I will be getting lower profile wheels. (18in?)

Peak Power: 525 hp @ 8200 rpm

Peak Torque: 414 lb-ft @ 3800 rpm

0-62 mph: 4.1 sec.

Top Speed: 190 mph

My existing insurance didn't tell me there would be a problem?

They will be my insurance on the car until the car arrives there, and than I need to switch to the Chubb Switzerland office.

They said we really didn't have to do anything for 6 months ..

If theres a problem, can I just send my car back to Canada? (ha.)

As someone that imported a modified car and know the pit falls i can easily say you have no chance of having it registered here without massive expense.

your only chance to have it here is to keep it on canadin plates for 1 year after import then send it back to canada.

when its here you can have a word with the DTC who are the people authorised to issue a certificate for it as no certificate already exists but beware this could easily be more than 40K.

does your speedo also show kmh?

We could insure it no problem, modded cars are not an issue for us, but...

Forget about bringing it over, it will be a nightmare as SC says. It will cost THOUSANDS to get it through the MFK and certification, it is an absolute loss leader. You are far better off leaving it there or, if here for longer, sell it and buy a GTS here.

There is a whole list of things that just won't work with a RD Sport car here!

You'd have to have a mod company that was Europe and Swiss known / certified. Great car 'tho.

40k?!

What the kkk.

Can I just ship it back and forth ... or do they see all? haha, ugh.

Yeah, its in kmh...

But theres a RD Sport company in Italy?

I didnt think it was THAT unheard of.

This car over all cost about 150,000 ..

Don't really want to depart with it . ):

Could be more than Rob's 40K if they need to change parts that are compliant too...

, so best bet is to just ship if over for a year and than ship it back?

I'm in switzerland for 3 years, so I would hate to leave it here for 3 years - the car won't be nearly as impressive in 3 years.

No point, :/

Yeah, could have it for one year here and then ship it back again.....

You still might come into grief if stopped at a control if for example it's too noisy...

Leave it there for 3 years, or sell it.

Switzerland is not a car orientated society. If someone drives past with a special car, people won't think they are impressive,

but they will think EXACTLY the opposite!

the swiss company that markets my car here paid over 22K getting a certificate for a supercharger that added 50hp to a 2.0l.

The cost was low because the car shares the same body and braking system as the 3.0l with about the same power output so lots of tests were skipped.

my life,

my car's engine.

Wait.... Stop Press!

I didn't know it was a Racing dynamics car...Didn't read the whole blub... just skimmed oops... Did you buy it as such or was it a standard M that was modded to this spec with an RS46 engine fitted? i.e are there any parts that are not RD or came from RD partners for their build?

Haha, I think I've listed that is RD

It was originally just an M3 (obviously)

Than it was taken down to California for all the work to be done on it

oooo, my thousandth post

as I said I should have read more deeply...

OK, so it went to Racing Dynamics then and all conversions were done by them?

RD are like Hartge (one of which I owned in the past) or Alpina, they are certified BMW modification and manufacture companies like Brabus for Merc and are European, thus they have certificates for their bits and works. The parts they are using are TUV and it's not so hard to get the documents for... You just need to call them and see if anyone has ever tested one for, or sold one in Switzerland, specifically the engine for noise and hopefully you don't have forced induction...

I don't think they are big enough to be classed as a manufacturer in their own right ala Alpina or Brabus but I will do some digging around...

Congratulations, and especially thanks for all your well informed answers about insurance.

Cheers mate!!! It kinda crept up on me!

Alpina are a manufacturer in their own right - the original BMW chassis number is crossed out and a new one stamped. Racing Dynamics are a tuning company - very good - but still just a tuning company.

Potentially RD wheels have been homologated for Switzerland - but I doubt very much whether the rest has. You could call Emmenegger Power - they may point you in the right direction.

FYI - I have a set of Tarox 6-pot brakes to go on a an E36/E46/E85 lying about the workshop in the UK - EP told me I would have no hope of putting them on a car in Switzerland due to having to get them homologated.

Good luck
