Does anyone have experience with getting your newborn son circumsized in Switzerland? In the US, it's customary for a pediatrician or even the OB/GYN to perform the procedure a few days after the birth in the hospital, but I have heard that it is unusual here and we may have to find a urologist willing to perform the procedure. We live in the Zug area.
It's not a widely performed procedure here in Switzerland like it is in the states. Not to start a debate, but why would you cut your son's bits off? (I have 2 boys and the thought never crossed my mind to do such a horrible thing to them)
If you really want to go through with it, a Urologist I can suggest is Dr. Heinrich Gretener at Andrea's Klinik in Cham-he speaks english, but I'm not sure if he does circumcisions. I do know he does a great job doing male "family planning".
there was a thread a while back on circumcision and it got lots of heated responses - its not the done thing over here or i think in many many parts of europe, certainly isn't in the UK either - I'm not going to be judgemental regardless of my views but ouch!! poor kid
Would you be willing to travel to the Dubendorf area? It seems like there's one guy who does it there for all of Zurich. The baby has to be younger than 4 months and he uses the plastibell method.
Well..it is performed in Switzerland..in geneva certainly (optional)..the cost is usually between 1200-1500 CHF. If performed right after birth or in the first week. it is not painful during this period since all nerves which register pain are not activated. I got it for my son in geneva Hospital. You should go to your local Childrens Hospital and ask them. Most of the doctors speak english in Switzerland and they will guide you.
Which is why I specified it was a Ugandan-based study, and elaborated on its irrelevance to us in a further post. All he asked for was a source, so I provided 1.
I think you are mistaken. The only person I know recently who had her son circumcised, her son refused to eat/drink/breastfeed for 24 hours after the procedure...so you tell me that it doesn't affect the child ?
The saddest thing was, we asked her why she had it done, and she told us she just thought 'everyone' did it...in Australia it is not the 'done thing' these days...
As for the original question, I am sure your doctor/your child's doctor would be able to provide you with a referral...and discuss the options of methods (there are several), the timing (there are a few options on this) and whether any anaesthetic is used (and the risks for this)...
