What is the deal with employing a cleaner in Switzerland for a couple of hours a week?

Do you always have to register them and pay their AHV and accident insurance etc? Or is there a specific number of hours they must do for you before you have to do this?

Is it not possible for a cleaner to be self employed? For example if they do 2 hours a week for 20 different households? Or would every household have to employ them and register them?

They could set themselves up as a company but the ones I have employed indeed all have multiple employers who each register as employer and pay their social security etc.

In Zurich its not overly complicated once you have done the set up. Not sure of Wallis - in GVA there were "cheque emploi" to make the process cleaner.

Thanks, but I’m still not seeing clear answers to my 2 questions.

Can a cleaner be self employed? Therefore no need for the person hiring them to do anything?

Is there a number of hours you need to employ someone for before you have to do the wage admin? (I’m guessing not)

It just seems crazy that someone might work 2 hours a week for 20 different people and have AHV and accident insurance etc set up with all of them. Coming from the U.K. this seems bonkers. Surely better to be self employed?

The person hiring them should ensure that the cleaner is legal, proper permit and paying AVS and other obligations. Ignorance is no excuse.

You're absolutely correct in what you say, but having said that, I don't know anyone who actually does that if they are just working say 3 or 4 hours once or twice a week.

A few friends have full time maids and they are properly employed of course, but that's 8 hour days, 5 days a week, so a full time job.

NEVER EVER engage them without proper paperwork and comply fully with the relevant regulations. Multiple risks which can happen incase you do that. Not worth it.

Yes cleaners can set up as self employed if they are from EU or Swiss, I have not know any who do.

You start paying from the first hour they clean for you. The next threshold is 8 hrs/week and then you need t pay accident insurance also for non professional accidents. The cost for non professional accidents can be charged to the cleaner.
