Clock change 2021

So last year the EU voted to end the summer/winter time clock changes in 2021. Has anyone heard what time zone various countries have decided that they will be on? I can't find any info anywhere.

Apparently the deadline was April 2020, but no country has yet officially said what it will do:

The EU member states should have come up with a plan until April this year, but I assume that nobody really cares about it now with Corona going on.

No, they didn't. They allowed for the possibility, was all.

Lets hope they forget about this nonsense and go back to normal time permanently

I really like Summer/Winter time.

I like it when it's not dark when I ride to work.

Which it would be if there was "Summer time" in Winter.

I don't really see a problem with it. Computers have it figured out (mostly - hello Apple), people have gotten used to it.

I find it ridiculous and actually hypocritical that of all things, people claim that cows and animals are "suffering" from it - as if most of these animals aren't stressed and suffering most of their lives until their death to end up in our food-chain.

That's not correct. All members of the EEA are supposed to end clock changes in 2021 by selecting either permanent summer time (daylight saving time, or DST) or standard time ("winter time"). All of the EEA (except Iceland, which hasn't had DST for more than 50 years) will move their clocks forward one hour in March 2021. For those countries opting for permanent DST, that will be their last clock change (at least until the inevitable next round of clock-fiddling in the not-too-distant future). Countries that want grim, miserable, permanent standard/winter time will move their clocks back in October 2021 and will stay there.

In short, every EEA country is supposed to choose either permanent summer time or permanent standard time. There are supposed to be no more clock changes after 2021. The only country in the region with the right to continue switching to and from summer time is Switzerland, which is a member of neither the EU nor the EEA -- but it would obviously be impractical for this small country to maintain a different time zone (at some time of the year or another) to all of its neighbours.

Whether this poorly thought out proposal actually goes ahead is another question...

Absolutely no reason to have this Summer time thing . Its against nature

The Parliament voted on a draft proposal for a directive from the Commission, but to become law it still requires the approval of the Council and to the best of my knowledge that has not happened. So no change for the present.

The Commission can propose and the Parliament can approve but in the end everything must be agreed by the Council - the heads of state.

Changing time is nonsense. Even third-world countries like Russia and China don't do this anymore.

AND (!)

it has most negative effect on cows, they get stressed when the farmer suddenly doesn't come at usual time. FOR MILK AND CHEESE!!!

And when the sun is direct overhead its no longer 12 midday. It's 13 midday. Such idiocy. And who wants to eat at 6 pm when its full sun and hot. And to eat at 7 is no answer. Dumb people who support this nonsense! But thats the name of the game these days!

To my mind, anyone that can't simply adjust their life patterns to the clock change must be somewhat lacking. I fail to see the problem.

Not sure if you're joking. I grew up in a farming community. The cows were milked the same time of day, whether it was daylight saving time for the humans or not. Why? Because making the cows wait an extra hour to be milked just because your (the farmer's) clock sprang forward is not a nice thing to do. The farmers liked to keep the schedule the same year-round. I don't know about Swiss farmers but it wouldn't surprise me if they also kept the schedule the same.

Actually, it does apparently have a negative effect on some people's health and circadian rhythms:

Quote:

"Changing the time, even if it is only by 1 hour, disrupts our body clocks or circadian rhythm. For most people, the resulting tiredness is simply an inconvenience. For some, however, the time change can have more serious consequences.

Studies link the lack of sleep at the start of DST to car accidents, workplace injuries, suicide, and miscarriages.

The early evening darkness after the end of the DST period is linked to depression.

The risk of suffering a heart attack is also increased when DST begins. However, the extra hour of sleep we get at the end of DST has in turn been linked to fewer heart attacks."

Only for those people who are unable, or unwilling, to simply shift their schedule by the same hour as the clocks change. Get up at six one day, clocks change overnight, get up at seven the next day.

And anyway, circadian rhythms have been extensively studied over the years, and the human body (and mind) is easily able to cope with small adjustments with no ill effect, so absorbing the one hour clock change over the course of three nights over the weekend should not have any negative effect at all.

So, the best way should be, if our "time zone" would adapt to our West - East movement, and lunch should be always when sun is in the zenith? When I think about it, I can only say: "This is such a great pre-industrial idea, which can be perfectly executed only now, in digital era, when we carry the GPS/clock enabled devices all the time on us. "

To help you understand the futility of your desire, here is the image with the name "how wrong is your time zone" or you can ask yourself, why Spanish people have their dinner so late.

I'll be leaping for joy the day I don't have to adjust that dam oven clock anymore.

I could go on, but sure, we don't have to change anything because you have the time, ability and willingness to spend 3+ days to steadily ease yourself in and adapt

Really funny to find inconvenience in time change in an expat forum with family members in different time zones. In my case home is 7 hours later, travel at least once a year and have to deal with significant time difference

Just for extra spice in life: customers are spread between UTC+2 and UTC -7.

Switzerland will do what Germany does. Germany hasn’t decided to do anything. They might not even think about it for a few years, decades or millennium.

Despite all the rationale for changing CH will not before DE. With a bit of luck FR and IT will follow DE. But even if they don’t CH will do what DE does.
