Clocks across Europe display the wrong time due to Kosovo/Serbia electric grid disput

Dispute between Kosovo and Serbia means not enough electricity went in the system to keep many clocks up to speed. Could have lost as much as 6 minutes.

"Are you running late for work and blaming your electric alarm clock?

The real reason may lie in a dispute between Kosovo and Serbia, which has affected Europe’s power grid.

Entsoe, the body representing electricity transmission operators across 25 European countries, said bedside clocks had slowed down by up to six minutes since mid-January.

Central heating timers and oven clocks are also affected - but not computers or smart phones.

Countries from Spain to Turkey and from Poland to the Netherlands are part of a large area in Europe linked together into an electricity grid that operates at a synchronised frequency. This frequency regulates time-keeping in certain devices.

The UK and some Nordic countries are not affected.

During the crisis period, Kosovo did not generate enough electricity to meet its needs.

According to Entsoe, Serbia is legally obliged to meet Kosovo’s demand to keep the European grid stable.

But because Kosovo and Serbia are in dispute over the issue - and many more related to Kosovo’s unilateral secession from Serbia 10 years ago - Serbia did not step in.

This failure to act on time forced the frequency to “deviate” - and the drop affected the clocks. Other countries that lost reserves amounting to 113 GWh are seeking compensation.

“The deviation stopped yesterday [Tuesday] when Kosovo generated the energy it needs,” Entsoe spokeswoman Susanne Nies told the BBC.

Surplus energy would need to be generated and fed into the system over time for the balance to be redressed across the continent, Ms Nies said.

So yes, you can manually adjust your clocks - but they will automatically be reset to the correct time once the grid stabilises."

Weirdly, the clock on my oven is suddenly showing the time six minutes behind. I wonder if this would explain the reason why.

Same here!

Mine too!

Article does say oven clocks.

Article here.

This has affected the digital clock on my oven, as well as the time/temperature sign on the building outside my apartment.

Anyone else notice clocks that were formerly accurate mow showing a time that's six minutes slow?

Thought i was going crazy, same here on electronic digital clocks. Was about to google electric shortage or call company to report a problem.

Yep, noticed this yesterday. Oh-so-smart oven gets it's time from the internet, but not-so-smart microwave sat above it has a traditional clock. About 5 minutes difference...

Snap!

Now I have to figure out how to set the oven clock again doh!

Yes. Noticed it on Sunday. The weird thing is I have 3 built in V-Zug machines, which have always showed the same time (I set the clocks by turning the main breaker on at noon), but they are not just out by about 6 minutes, but they now differ amongst themselves by almost 3 minutes.

we had new appliances installed recently and I noticed the times were out a few days ago, assumed it was set incorrectly by the installers, seems I was wrong.

D'oh. I must have missed that earlier post. I blame the clocks slowing down.

No problem, and I've merged the threads.

Perfectly normal behaviour if you ask me

My Longines were suddenly 5 minutes ahead today. I checked with my oven clock and moved them 5 mins back...

1st world problem thread.

Yesterday I realized (prior to reading this today) that not only the clock on my oven was five or six minutes behind, but also my watch was three days behind

Yep, February does that to you every year - except a leap one.

Not one of ours has been off.

That's what you get for having ancient technology!

Tom

P.S. The wind-up stuff is still correct as well, as is the 250 year old grandfather clock!
