We just moved to a new apartment. Very nice, quite new and affordable price...
Only one issue, the heating system does not seems to be working propery since it's cold!. I called to complain to the administrator and he said that in Switzerland temperature in the houses is set between 20 and 22 C. ( not even came to check... spoke by phone)
The first thing i will do, it's to check the "actual" temperature for 24 hours, to see it it stays whithin that range...
Did any of you have the same issue? There is any "rule" or "law" that states that temperature should be between 20 and 22 C?
Been here for over 10 years and never heard of that, can you not turn the heating up yourself we can ajust our tempreture to how high, or low we want it.
Yes, in the apartment there is a kind of valve to regulate the temperature in every room. But even if we put it at max. it's still cold in some rooms....
I'm very curious to take the actual temp and see how the landlord react to that.
Well actually that's true, many apartments especially in apartment blocks are regulated just as you said, between 20-22C and then also turned down to a minimum temperature during the night.
Sometimes it depends on where you are in the building. In my building I was at one end and it was always cold. I am right in the middle and I rarely put my heating on as the floors are always warm as I think the hot water pipes run under my floors. It is always too hot.
It very much depends on the landlord and the age of the house. New houses have individual counters and then you can heat as much as you want. Older houses however have common ones and then they try to save money by keeping the heating at a maximum "standard level" which is 20-22 during the day and 16-18 during the night. For me that is too cold and I have suffered in many appartments in the past because of this.
Individual heating and own washing machine is a must for me when I look for appartment.
Your distance from the heating source will also determine your eventual heat level. You can find a infra-red point and read temperature device that will give the readings off any surface in a blink. Think of investing in that.
Sounds like you have underfloor heating, not radiators, but the master temperature is set wherever the central heating system for the building is.
It would be worth verifying the actual temperature but you should know that the legal minimums might be well below your comfort level.
P.S. Just thought I would mention I have a extra warm duvet for sale. It was bought for a guest room that was 16 degrees at night on a good night. I have an ad here.
I have the EXACT opposite problem. There is no radiators in our appartment and we can not find anywhere to regulate it but we are not cold, we are WAY TOO WARM. So warm we get sleepy and dry and need to keep on drinking all the time while inside the house, keep windows open (and we are getting sick from it), it is so hard to sleep....
We talked to the landlord and she said someone would come on sept the 3rd to check it and i am still waiting....I have headaches from the heat...seriously..
How to check for the room temperature quite accurately? is there a special kind of thermometer?
With energy costs being what they are, what a waste of money. If you have no rads, then you have underfloor heating. Look around your apartment for something with a metal cover on it, a small door which when you open, might have the individual controls. It might be inside a closet, near the entrance, in the kitchen. Usually it is found low to the ground. If you don't find anything that looks like that, then the controls might be in the basement. This gets more complicated and I would leave that to the landlord.
A letter to the landlord should help remind them that you are expecting a visit but first you should get even a simple thermometer to measure the room temperature so you can back up what you are saying. Be sure to close the windows to get an accurate reading.
I am not sure what is worse, too hot or too cold ?
why don't you get in touch with Mieterschutz..they protect the rights of renters in switzerland..give them a call and see what they say, it might help!
We have underfloor heating and are on the top floor - we are too hot (usually)...
Our heating adjustments are in the wall - little doors with a handle on the front, circular dials with 'auf' and 'zu' - of course 'auf' = 'ON' and 'zu' = OFF...
Even with all the heating off our apartment gets very warm in the day if it's sunny...but I must admit DH quite likes leaving the heating on in the bathroom so it's warm when he gets up for his shower (it's the coldest are area of the apartment)...
I've also heard of people having heating dials in the hall/cleaning cupboard...

Agreed! I checked with the heating engineer when I moved into our present place and he came to service the heating system. He told me the “ideal” temperature setting was 16 to 18 degrees in the bedrooms and 20 to 23 degrees in the living rooms. But the problem is people have different thermal sensitivites. My other half “feels the cold”. When we lived in the UK she would set the thermostat to 25 to 30 degrees! For me it was unbearable. So we react very differently to a temperature of 22 degrees. It's quite enough for me but nowhere near toasty enough for my wife I don’t know why some folks feel the cold more than others. Age has something to do with it. Probably metabolic, physical and psycological factors. But whatever the actual temperature, there’s nothing worse than feeling cold. I would get a room thermometer and check the actual air temperature, as you suggest. If it’s within the recommended range and it’s still not enough why not buy one of the mobile plug in electric/oil radiators to provide a bit of a boost. Might cost you a bit more to run but it won’t break the bank if you use it sensibly.
Thank you!! You wouldn't believe the patronizing comments you get when you are "cold blooded" as I am. The thing is that I am physically cold and there is nothing mental that I can do about it (as a lot of people seem to think). Of course you can put on more clothes but there is a limit even to that. Currently, in our 22 degree bedroom, I sleep with full pyjama, socks, duvet and blanket on top of that.
Also, it is rather difficult to work with the computer with thick mittens and it is quite difficult to breath with a scarf wrapped around your face. :-)
Being pregnant was great as then I finally experienced what it was like to be "normal" with regards to this.
