Colmar - worth going?

I've been wondering if it's worth taking a little day-trip to Colmar, France from Basel or not? Some say it's a really pretty city but has any of you been there?

I wonder how much does the train ticket cost from Basel...?

It's very nice, I have been and would go again.

Ticket prices maybe here www.sbb.ch

It's lovely, especially at Christmas, but charming any other time as well.

I agree, its a lovely place to visit. I really like the whole Alsace area.

They got a KFC there.

The Quest for a 6 Piece (KFC)

Been there for X-mas market. Really lovely place to visit. Have greatly enjoyed the walk by the river, very picturesque

Absolutely, it has a lovely historic center, nice cafés and restaurants. The best times to visit, at least in my opinion, is spring (now), autumn and just before Christmas. In the summer months I found it to be too overcrowded with tourists.

I can also strongly recommend the Alsace Wine Route, which is a beautiful drive between Strasbourg and Mulhouse (not the motorway!!!) with charming towns, delicious food and great wine. You can make a whole long weekend of it with some overnight stays. The wine is relatively inexpensive, compare to Tuscany or Burgundy, and very good value. There are tasting opportunities at every corner and you can load up the car boot to enjoy them for many Sunday lunches back in swiss

Next KFC run to Colmar ??? Hmmm ???

Definitely will go for Colmar AND KFC...

There's a number of michelin starred restaurants worth visiting. Lunchtime menus are generally not to outrageously priced.

Definitely worth visiting and deffo worth living there (just might go back).

We're just planning this trip for the weekend, but by car.

I'm afraid I mentioned the WW1 trenches not far away, and my spouse is adding that to the excursion. I'm more interested in the wine myself.

Thanks for this post, we are going to visit this weekend too.

KFC is not Michelin starred yet. However they're really upping their game with the boneless mixed bucket. We'll see what the 2011 inspectors think.

Could you share the restaurants' names?

Here you go

My wife and myself went to Colmar last weekend. OK - the main reason was that we heard from another thread that there was a KFC not far from there.

We went by SNCF and it cost 41 CHF return from basel.

18 Euro in a Taxi from Colmar station to KFC (which was not that nice - no gravy, undercooked chicken)

We walked back down the motorway as the buses do not run on Sunday - got pulled up by the police, but was not a major deal as they just told us to to walk round the airport.

Eventually got into Colmar old town and this was a real eye opener - so lovely. It was like going back in time. We found a really nice English bar in the middle of a maze and the people were more than friendly. Made our day.

After getting directions to the the railway station we stumbled across a Michelin star restaurant - just had the starters there and it was AB Fab. Do not know the name of the place, but it is 30 metres from the railway station- will go and test out my credit card there sometime soon.

Was a strange day out-but will definitely wander back.

Maybe there is a cheaper way to get there?

...well, you could join us on our "quest for a 6 piece (KFC) II"...you surely displayed the right spirit.

What is the fascination with KFC? We stopped at Colmar KFC on Monday as we were passing. Husband is a KFC fan, it just made me feel sick - plus the chips are rubbish

Anyway Colmar is a beautiful town, we went in Dec for the Xmas markets

Nicky girl...like many quests in life..it ain't really about the goal...but rather the way to reach it.

Colmar is not just a great little spot. It is a must-see destination. I could give it a pass only at Christmas, when the Christmas market comes unto the town and obliterates it with people and people and people and things.

There are many lovely spots in Alsace, but what makes Colmar a must is the Isenheim altarpiece at the Museum Unterlinden . It doesn't matter if you like art or not, these works are worth crossing Europe to visit. A trip to Colmar without seeing these paintings would be woefully incomplete.
