Commuting from Lausanne to Martigny

Hi all,

Next year, I will be starting a job in Martigny, Valais. I am considering living in Lausanne since I already know some people there and it seems like a much livelier place in general. This means I would have to commute to Martigny during the week, probably by train, since I don't yet own a car. Does this seem viable? Has anyone done something similar?

I am also considering Montreux as a halfway-point between Lausanne and Martigny, although it seems like it might be a bit more expensive.

I would love to hear your opinions about these options and life in Lausanne/Montreux/Martigny. Thanks!

Train is easy

Montreux is nothing for you, no friends and not near work.

Martigny is fairly fun if you speak a bit of French preferably

Train is 48-52 minutes, plus buses at both ends, twice a day?

OTOH Martigny is minutes away from Verbier, and other Valais resorts. And Chamonix.

Valais taxes are lower than Vaud.

In any event, you could/should try renting a room in Martigny for during the week and return to Lausanne on the weekend. That way you have an easier commuting situation (2x week) and can see if Martigny is a fit for you before making the move.

If you keep Lausanne as your place of residence, you will be taxed at Vaud rates vs Wallis.

Health insurance and taxes are lower (significantly) in the Valais compared to Vaud. Martigny gets better weather, but it's known as the windy city.

Thanks for the replies!

With Martigny, I am a bit worried that it might be hard to develop and keep an active social life, as it's a fairly small town and I don't speak french (although I am planning to learn).

Nevertheless, I think I might give living there a try and see from there.

They all like their social life in Martigny.......

I think this is the right choice. You will learn French much quicker there than in Lausanne.

Get out meet and talk to people and in a very little time you will be posting here about your new Swiss passport.

I would consider Sion over Martigny. I prefer Lausanne over both though.

Sion is 10 minutes away by train from Martigny.
