Next year, I will be starting a job in Martigny, Valais. I am considering living in Lausanne since I already know some people there and it seems like a much livelier place in general. This means I would have to commute to Martigny during the week, probably by train, since I don't yet own a car. Does this seem viable? Has anyone done something similar?
I am also considering Montreux as a halfway-point between Lausanne and Martigny, although it seems like it might be a bit more expensive.
I would love to hear your opinions about these options and life in Lausanne/Montreux/Martigny. Thanks!
In any event, you could/should try renting a room in Martigny for during the week and return to Lausanne on the weekend. That way you have an easier commuting situation (2x week) and can see if Martigny is a fit for you before making the move.
If you keep Lausanne as your place of residence, you will be taxed at Vaud rates vs Wallis.
With Martigny, I am a bit worried that it might be hard to develop and keep an active social life, as it's a fairly small town and I don't speak french (although I am planning to learn).
Nevertheless, I think I might give living there a try and see from there.
