I have been approached to do some freelance for a company based in Switzerland. I have no connections there at all.
I will do the due diligence I can via google searches. Is there other free/low cost information readily available? What I am thinking of is, eg, in the UK a check of Companies House beta records shows accounts (albeit normally minimum one year out of date), immediate ownership, whether there is significant indebtedness at the company etc.
Is there an equivalent here?

There's the commercial register. You may check if the company exists in first place, the registered address, etc. https://www.zefix.ch/de/search/entity/welcome
Cantons also have a handelsregister, this one from ZH https://zh.chregister.ch/cr-portal/suche/suche.xhtml
https://moneyhouse.ch/en/overview is what I used. For 79 francs you get access to a wealth of information, but even the registered free option is quite useful.
