Cooking oil question…

Everywhere we’ve lived, there’s been different regulations (or methods) to dispose of cooking oil. Whether it be pouring it in the sewer (Jakarta), additives that harden into a plastic that can be dropped into the recycling (Japan), into a jar into the trash (NYC), and so on...

So what’s the way to dispose of the oil left over from making a bunch of French fries here? Is there something I’ve missed?

Ask your Commune. Our Commune has special containers to pour used oil into. So pour into jar or other container, and when full take to recycling centre.

Thanks, I didn’t notice it, I’ll check!

We have to take ours to the recycling centre too.

They have big containers that we have to pour it into.

Okay. Now, to keep it from getting all over the car... any suggestions? (Hopes that there’s a nifty but not too costly Swiss device for this... like the raclette potato warmer bag.

Pour it into an old water or juice bottle and screw on the lid. If it's a bit drippy, put the bottle into a plastic sack and tie it securely.

I pour the oil into and old oil or water bottle and screw the lid on tightly.

I then stand it on a piece of kitchen towel in an empty plastic ice cream tub in the footwell of the car

In my kreis, next to the recycling bins, there are two large containers, one to dispose of cooking oil, the other for industrial oil.

Also, if you buy French fries you can bake in the oven, it’ll save you the hassle and they’re also crunchy and good

At your déchetterie, also a place for motor oil.

We hardly ever deep fry. But if we did I'd probably get us something like a fuel container/can, probably metal. They're quite sturdy, can be closed tight, come for various volumes, and dropping them or a sudden brake is a non-issue. Easy to keep the outside clean, and they keep smells inside.

Put it back in the bottle it came from when to old to use anymore, and bring it you your local trash place.

I used to throw away into the oil bins but now it is cold and my oil is hard. It's either gonna wait summer or go to the bin...
