Cool New Gadget - Google Chromecast

Digitec has them on sale today for 55 Fr.

Hello,

I would like to buy this device in order to use it with the "Horizon TV" application from Cablecom. Has anybody tried this application with the Chromecast? Does it work?

I need it because I would like to install a television in a room in which I cannot get the cable connection.

That would be a perfect solution for me.

Thanks a lot for your help!

I have one, but it doesn't seem to work most of the time. Pressing cast on the youtube android app usually results in a 'can't find CC' error message (though video may start a few seconds later).

No, this is not (yet) a supported app by Chromecast. Uptil now, only a few apps are supported viz. Google Play Music, Google Play Movies, Youtube, Netflix, Hulu Plus, Pandora and HBO Go. Until they remove the whitelisting limitation, no other apps will be able to work with the Chromecast, even if they implement the Chromecast code.

I have had a trouble free experience with my Chromecast till date. I use the Youtube, Google Play Music, Netflix and Hulu Plus apps regularly and have never had any issues with casting.

It seems a bit peculiar that they haven't allowed it to be used for other apps yet.

maybe it's the other way around.....and it's based on DRM issues?

Probably more to do with the chromcast SDK not being fully released yet.

Google also stopped allcast from working in their very own brand of free and open.

Probably to keep rights holders happy in some way........

I'm pretty sure when the SDK is out that we will be able to stream local content.

I've read that plex will want too integrate it into their software

All I'm saying is that it's a pretty basic device at the moment...especially if you're outside the US and don't want to faff around with your router like Varun has.

I have it connected to my TV always and just cast movies from my macbook via chrome browser. works like a charm. what I would is to do the same from my ipad

I find that comes out quite choppy. I just stream using my PS3 at the moment.

It's a great device for casting youtube video for the sprog so not a waste of money at all...it just needs more support before it's a complete device.

I have problems with the Google TV being able to play my DVDs that I'm ripping without doing any extra encoding. So I got a chromecast hoping that I'd be able to play stuff this way. But so far I'm still waiting...

YouTube has worked fine for me. Also streaming video in a browser and then casting that over to the TV worked ok too. I've not been able to get Netflix working, so will be sticking with the Google TV for a while longer.

The Roku device is a good alternative

I am disappointed by this device. No 5GHz support and does not pick up my Cablecom Horizon Box, I ended up configuring it through an alternative WiFi router, which means all my clients have to use this extra wireless network. Crap for a hard wired PC.

Also, App Support is poor. There's not much you can do with this toy.

i'd be happy just to use if as an easy way to push youtube onto the telly, but it doesn't seem that they've managed to do this well.

Works perfectly for me. Must be a user error.

really?? this is the one thing that works really well....

OK, solved the separate WLAN issue by putting the 2nd router into AP mode, and thus on the same subnet as my PC... Can now Chromecast from my hard-wired PC to the CC plugged into the TV.

Still not a lot to do with it though

was a firewalling issue. chromecast uses ephemeral UDP port instead of 1900:

works fine now.

Hi,

another increase in the number of apps supporting Chromecast, now up to 14 apps.

Probably the most interesting for a lot of people will be the support of Plex.

I assume once they starting selling them in the UK that they will support all the UK catchup services.

Have fun
