This week in the Bern region they have most of the Coop brand rice on sale 30% off. Having purchased a few boxes on Tuesday, I can confirm the higher base prices are already in effect .

Therefore if you like the Basmati rice like we do, it's a good idea to stock up this week when the "sale" makes it cost the same as the old base price.

If you like Basmati rice you should go to any ethnic type shop and get a 5KG bag for about 10CHF.

Semi - "Off Topic"

I still don't get this whole "Boil rice in little plastic bags" thing.

What's wrong with a normal bag of rice, a coffee cup, and a sieve.

We did that once, and it was absolutely awful rice. The coconut milk was sketchy too. Maybe just went to the wrong shop or got a bad bag? Any recommendations in Bern? We go through lots of rice!

The best Basmati rice is probably Tilda. But it's not 10CHF for 5KG.

We use Barkat Basmati Rice. We are South Asian and have never had any complaints.

Tilda is 7.90 for 1 kg. at our local ethnic store, might be less in larger quantities. It is really good. We don't eat lots of rice so it lasts for a while. Isn't there an Indian store in Bern near the hirschengraben?

There are 2 Asian stores within 2 mins walk of the Bahnhof and a few others around the Bern area. The big bags of rice are usually much better than over processed stuff like Uncle Bens, which has almost no taste. There are different grades of rice so perhaps you chose a low grade?

Could be, but I wouldn't know about it. I live in the sticks somewhat near Bern so never actually do much shopping in the city proper.

The basmati rice from Aldi is also ok

I've never been to their Bern branch but am a regular at the store in Zürich.

Have you tried to Turkish shop at Stöckackermore tram stop, in Bethlehem

There's one on Moserstrasse in Breitenrain and one on Lorrainestrasse (no. 15 I think, by the Indian restaurant). I prefer the Lorrainestrasse one.
