Subsidies work differently in different Cantons or even different towns. In Zurich, the local town halls (Gemeinde) have childcares where subsidies are available. The best thing would be to find out from your local Gemeinde website which childcare centres (Krippe/Kita) are connected to them, and then enquire directly to the childcare centre.

When unemployed you need to be actively looking for work, if you want to be available for work when you are a Mum you are only available when child care in taken care off, daycares have waiting list...
So you expect the taxpayers to fund everything you do, you already get unemployment benefits why should you get extra just because you have kids and are unemployed?
I assume that she has been paying into the UI scheme here if she is qualified for unemployment benefits. If so, why shouldn't she benefit from what she has been paying into? I just ask because a few posters make it sound like a bit of a shameful thing. Also, I understand from an acquaintance here that you need to prove that you are actively, aggressively, job searching while on these benefits. Hard to go to multiple interviews a week and concentrate on the search if you don't have reliable, flexible childcare at least some of the time (I don't see where she mentioned it was for full- time). And finally, if such subsidies exist for her particular set of circumstances, why on earth should she not use them? I know I would use whatever help is available to me to find gainful employment and keep my family financially afloat in the case success does not happen quickly.
I was in a similar situation to you. I got round it by accident. Was offered a job - and so signed my kids up at the state-supported regional nursery network. A place only became available 6 months later, by which time the job offer had been withdrawn. But the place was still open to me.
Try linking with ppl in your community in a similar situation; they look after your kids for a morning, you look after theirs. That's what I've done. And you use your kid-free time to job hunt.
Wow wallabies and today only!! Come on, the OP mentioned nothing about wanting full time care. I started to put my little girl at child are when I was unemployed, so I could take time to look for employment, call and attend interviews. How can you pay for a crèche if you don't have the money to? I really think the subsidiary system us great. When I first sent my child to daycare it cost me 0.48 CHF per hour (amazing huh) nowi earn I pay more which I'm more than happy to, cos I can. It kind of feels like there is an air if resentment from those who can afford to pay more against those who can't..

There are any number of reasons to be unemployed and requiring childcare time: to job hunt has already been mentioned; to study; to just have a little break; to enable the child to spend some time with other children; to enable the child to spend time with toys and activities that can't be provided at home; to be able to deal with the things in life that are not childfriendly - lawyers, standing in line at the post office, dentist appointent, hairdresser etc etc.
Frankly, I am quite happy to think part of my taxes go towards providing benefits to support single parents in my community to enable them to spend time at home with their child instead of dumping them to go to work.

I didn't. For the first year I was here I had 0 income, but compulsary insurance, compulsory canton taxes, rent,utilities with no help. Life can be tough sometimes, does it really bother you that a small bit if your money goes towards helping those who don't have as much money to get by a bit better? It would do you judging folk some good to see life from the other side for a little bit.
