Not quite food...well not supposed to be, but I was wondering if anyone had found cream of tartar to buy in the zurich area? Or failing that, does anyone have a recipe for making your own play dough without cream of tartar?!
I realize you are new here, so welcome, and try using the search function and you will surely find your answer. It is something that comes up again and again. Good luck!
Sorry folks. Maybe it was rude. If so, forgive me.
Searching under Tartar, I got 2 threads about cream of tartar, not including this one, and 1 about tartar sauce, and one about steak tartare. It ́s not a lot, but the information is there, and the threads are not that long( 1-2 pages) of short posts.
I thought it was Weinstein but I wasn ́t sure, so didn ́t want to send the OP on a wild goose chase. Rahmhalter, (meant to keep whipped cream stiff) at the supermarket is also the same stuff , I think.
I've made playdough using recipes calling for Cream of Tartar but left it out when I couldn't find any. It worked ok, so have never really worked out what the Cream of Tartar is for.
Thanks very much everyone! I did search but the info on cream of tartar was to do with where to buy it in Basel, so I wondered if maybe zurich had a magic supplier somewhere. Great news about the cream thickener stuff working, I'll give that a try as I have some in the cupboard that's years old and never gets used anyway...(I discovered you just have to whip longer, duh). And if it doesn't work, I'll hit the apotheke.
This recipe is for bouncy play dough you can keep for weeks:
Play Dough Recipe:
1 cup white flour
1/2 cup salt
2 tablespoon cream of tartar (find it in the spice section)
1 tablespoon oil
1 cup water
food coloring
Mix first 4 ingredients in a pan. Add water and mix well. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, for 3 – 5 minutes. Dough will become difficult to stir and form a “clump”. Remove from stove and knead for 5 minutes–add food coloring during kneading process. Play dough will keep for a long time stored in a covered plastic container or plastic sandwich bag.
Except in this case, find it in the apotheke. I've begun to catch on -- if I can't find something in the grocery store that I'm convince should be there, it's in the apotheke. I kept looking around for raspberry leaf tea, only to discover accidentally that it is sold in the pharmacy.
