Hi All,
I am wandering if it is possible to cross the border to german by bike. Let's say to Konstantz for example. From which post would you go in this case to get to Konstantz from the Switzerlannd side?
I once went to CERN, Geneva. It is close to French and the post on the border is not strict at all. People are passing on foot. It is so different with Switzerland-Germany border. I wander if bike is allowed or only allowed from certain post.
Thanks.
The borders aren't strict, because technically there are no borders within Schengen.
As long as you are on a road where cycling is allowed (i.e. not a motorway) then you will be fine.
No, there's nothing different about CH/DE borders. And any border crossing will do, even if it's unmanned, even if it's not even on a road. I used to walk or cycle off-road over into Germany all the time when I lived in Riehen, just as I sometimes cycle between France and CH these days.
Thanks for the replies.
I only went by bus to Germany once, and there was a checking procedure perfomed on the border where 2 guys entered the bus and ask our ID one-by-one. I imagine they would do the same if I try biking as well.
Perhaps, I am just a bit paranoid since I am not from any EU or Schengen countries.
We cycle backwards and forwards over the German Swiaa border often enough. Saddle bags bulging.. We've never been stopped even when we cross in Waldshut or Konstanz where masses of Swiss go over for the cheap shopping. I guess they assume from our sweaty appearance that we only have sweaty biking gear in the saddle-bags and not contraband
Yup you can just cycle across, was in Koblenz a few weeks ago and just cruised across, said Hi Germany, then Bye Germany, and came back. No control, no issues.
Used to do it all the time in Basel. Never a problem.
Regularly cycle over the border to France, including over an unmanned agricultural path. These days checks are more likely on a random basis on normal roads, not on the border. However, I've never been stopped on my bike.
Thanks all. It's really good to know.
