I'm looking for red pepper flakes (the type we used in the US for spicey italian or chinese recipes) but I am not sure which alternative is the best. Some look similar but are just called Paprika and I am not sure if they use the right kind of hot peppers.
Does anyone have experience with these products?
Thanks,
You can buy red pepper flakes at Coop. Are you having problems finding them?
If you're talking about the ones that are often on the table at Pizza Hut, you can get them at Globus. We got a small jar on sale 50% off just a few weeks ago.
I see various products and wonder which are best. I thought some people might have compared them and can tell us what they discovered.
Yes, the ones I know and love are similar to the Pizza hut chillies. I will try them and let you know.
Just grabbed the jar so I could give you more info. The bottle says organic chiliflocken and indicates the source is India. It's very good and packs quite a punch even if you only use a few flakes and/or seeds. Regular cost CHF 5.90 for 20 grams. Half off was a good deal, we thought. HTH
Edit to respond to your post above - they are exactly like Pizza Hut chillies, but a bit hotter. Maybe because the restaurant stuff sits out exposed to the air?
Take 2 - this is what I use, for me it's the same as home.
Look for Chilies Zerstossen (piments forts concasseĢs) in the jars in the spice racks at any supermarket.
For the freshest I usually buy mine at any Asian grocery but the ones at Coop and Migros are fine. Finely ground is called cayenne pepper.
Paprika is different, made from other types of peppers.
You will find them in any Italian shop under Peperoncini. If you want the real hot stuff go for the "Peperoncini dolci" (sweet peperoncini ).
I usually get mine at the little Italian shop at Hubertus (Tram Stop).
That would only last me a week!! So I head to Langestrasse area bumble around til I find an Asian looking store and buy it in 500grm packets for about the same price. There is a new Thai supermarket in Uetikon an See on Seestrasse,
http://www.sala-thai.ch/thai-shop/uetikon-am-see/ I have not been there but heard it is ok.
Everyone, who needs red pepper flake, may want to check out their local Indian or Chinese markets. Just today I saw a 1/2 kilo bag of pepper flakes at the Shanghai Asiatische market in Luzern. It might have been 5 francs.
