I was wondering if we could create a list of cute coffee places in Zurich offering fast and reliable wifi (and no, Starbucks does not count).
I'm newly arrived and I love spending time in coffee places while getting some work done. I searched for old posts, but only found one from 2007...I suspect things must have changed a bit since then?
I have the exact question today. Did you find any good ones? It would be lovely to get some work done but also enjoy a good coffee and watching the world go by.
All I need is coffee and free wifi - not big on "cute", particularly if I can't just get on with my work without being bothered or feeling noticed - where *$ fits the bill.
Go to yelp.ch and search for "coffee free wifi" in/near Zürich. There are plenty of places including La Stanza on Bleicherweg and Café Schöffel - small w/character.
Some of the cafes might not fit if you want to work there as well. I'd suggest Cafe Plusch in Aemtlerstrasse 16. They have good vibe for working and offer wifi too.
Given the cheap prices of mobile data contracts ( 1GB for CH 9.90/month ) you don't have to be tied to certain coffee shops. Just get a MiFi hotspot for about CHF50, pop in the data sim and you have fast wifi internet all over the place.
i never needed wifi as i surf via 3g when not at home or at work. so i have no clue what cafes offer free wifi? but i believe you can ask and you get the login? try "motta" at rathaus or "tearoom/blunt" on gasometerstrasse? could imagine "hiltl" offers it, too. "casablanca" on langstrasse i can think of, maybe "gloria" on josefstrasse? museum für gestaltung cafe could have it... but they dont advertise it, so... hit n miss...
If you go to meetup.com, there is a coffee lover group which meets regularly in different coffee places in Zurich.
You can just go through the list of past places they went to and check these places yourself. I am sure some of them would meet what you are looking for.
Good luck on this one! I live in Lausanne and not Zurich, but I find that generally there is no "cafe culture" in Switzerland. Most cafes are lacking in ambience, friendliness, nice décor and wifi. Plus the selection is generally awful (4 francs for a cup of steamed milk and the same hot chocolate powder that I have in my cupboard at home?? uh... no thanks). It's one of the things I miss most living in Switzerland.
Just arrived and slowly getting settled, thank you. :-)
I am here for a couple of weeks, then back to Los Angeles to pick up the last of my stuff, then officially moved here for good in August.
Yesterday I registered at Kreisburo and next week I go to immigration to get my long-term Visa card. Very very very exciting.
The next few weeks will be a lot of tasks: find a new doctor to get my prescriptions set up here (thank goodness I have health insurance through my husband), change my phone plan to a Swiss provider, unpack my stuff and get settled at home, start to think about getting a job, and much more.
Super excited to be here and learn to be Swiss! :-)
I can't remember if it's got Wifi or not, but my favourite café here is Café Henrici on Niederdorfstrasse. It's very cute with a really warm, friendly atmosphere.
