Cutting the window glass to install A/C

Hi all,

I need an odd job doing. I live on the top floor, in an apartment that I love. The only downsize is that there is no regular roof, it's sort of a terrace upstairs meaning it absorbs all the heat. When it's 30 degrees outside, it's like 45 inside!

I would like to buy one of those small A/C units for my room but I don't want the pipe to stick out of the window. I think it's quite ineffficent anyway.

Does anyone know a person who can cut the window glass in the size of the pipe so that it looks neat and becomes more efficient?

Thanks!

If the window is double (or triple) glazed, your only option is to have a new glazing unit made. You can't cut them without breaking the seal and letting out the (usually argon?) gas they are filled with. I have glass door with a catflap in it, and the panel had to be custom made.

I would maybe get some polycarbonate cut to fit in the gap when you open the window, and then cut a hole in that for the pipe. That will solve your open window inefficiency as well as being a whole lot cheaper (and reversable).

Kind regards

Ian

agree with this approach, as having a hole in the window would be inefficient in winter as well

Is this a Friday thread?

Any glazier should be able to replace your window with one with a hole for the ac. And if you are not triple-glazed go for that. That too will help with insulation.

Put a sprinkler on the roof and keep it wet

We had this done in our workspace a couple of years back.

I cannot find what was the company name but basically it was normal 'glazing' company so I'd say call around.

They came by, took measurements of window / glass (whole size is standard) and a month or so later theny came with new glass and replaced it.

The whole for outlet has rubber seal as well as plastic cover to close it if not in use.

We are in a drought.

As others have said - they will need to replace the double glazing panel. This can take a few weeks. Keep the old double glazing in case you are in a rented apartment, so you can always fit it back when you leave.

In interim, you can get these things:

The solution I've seen in a couple of apartments is using a window kit like this one: https://www.galaxus.ch/en/s2/product...upplier=406802

It's perfectly effective.

We used this approach. Works well!

As the window is sealed double/triple glazed you can easily take it out.

Take it out and store it in the basement, get a piece of single glass cut complete with hole and install it in the window.

I suggest single glaze for this as double glaze are gas filled and cutting ahole, sealing the edges and gas filling is VERY expensive, think around Chf 1'000.-- just for the hole and sealing, plus cost of glass.

Yep. Replacement double glazed door, with hole for cat door, cost us about 1'000CHF five years ago.

In case of burglary, would the insurance not argue that the apartment was left unlocked?

We had to get a new unit to fit the cat-flap- cost us a bomb!

If you own the house or rent the house makes the calculations very different !

These types of air con unit are inherently inefficient. All the heated air that it blows out of the hole needs to be replaced and that means with warm air from outside that gets sucked in through gaps etc. You'll always have as much if not more outside air than cooled air. Fine if you want to sit in front of the unit but don't expect it to cool the room except maybe at night when the outside temps have already dropped. If it is 45C then most of the 'cooling' will be extracting this hot air and replacing with cooler outside air.

If you are planning to cut a hole then get a two part A/C unit (cost ca. CHF 2000+) that will cool the room without sucking air in from outside.

Depending on your apartment design it may be easier and cheaper to drill a hole in the wall.

I vent my aircon into the chimney void rather than through a window, but my attic room is cooled beautifully. Even right now.

We had a portable aircon unit for the bedroom at our last flat as we were under a roof terrace and the heat was pretty uncomfortable in summer. There also wasn't the option of sleeping with a window open because of the noise from the Kleinbasel red light zone. We had the window kit that lets you vent out of the window and it was fine, never really noticed it. I wouldn't want to replace panes of glass in a rental apartment tbh, a bit different if you're the owner.

We moved to our current flat 4 years ago next month and thankfully have never needed to use the aircon unit, it's been in the box in the basement all this time.

just get a flexible rubber hose and channel the exhaust through the bathroom or kitchen vent or even out the mains outlet vents
